I'm not sure sometimes why it is that we think of Easter as being a more important Sunday than any other Sunday. After all, we are to meet on Sunday, each week, to worship and remember that He arose on the first day of the week. We are to keep in remembrance His great sacrifice for us, as unworthy as we are, His Resurrection that proves God the Father accepted the work He did on the cross, and look forward to the day he returns for us. Since we are to keep that in remembrance each day, to worship with that in mind each time we meet together, it seems a little odd for this Sunday to be so much more important. On the other hand, when we get married we are to be there to love and serve our spouse each day. But, that doesn't mean that we don't remember our anniversary as a little extra special to celebrate that love and time together. In that respect, I enjoy celebrating Easter, after all as the Apostle Paul points out, if he died but didn't arise then we are of all men most miserable (I Corinthians 15:19).
Friday before Easter the kids all went over to Memaw's house to dye some eggs from the get together. I think I've mentioned before that we didn't do that growing up, but I love it. I think it's alot of fun and they really do look neat, then you can still peel them and have tuna fish later! I didn't go over with them, but Gary told me all about it and Memaw took tons of pictures with the camera for me. Apparently Britt decided to drink some of the vinegar and dye. Everyone else was gagging and spitting, but he seemed pretty unaffected by it all. Ruth apparently was very careful with her eggs (she does help gather our fresh eggs, and I always tell her to be careful and carry it straight to Daddy, so maybe that's why). They all like to get together and dye eggs and Memaw likes to have them all over so it's a nice little tradition, and time to spend together with their cousins.
Easter Sunday is a time where we not only come together and remember the greatest gift that God gave us in His Son, but we also choose to spend the day with our natural family, which is another great blessing in this life. After Church we got a ton of pictures with Gary's family, before heading over to the big Varnum get together. They have two a year, one at Uncle Hank and Aunt Pat's for Easter, and the other at Aunt June and Uncle Jerry's on Christmas Eve. This is all the descendants of Gary's great-Grandmaw Princess (yes that really was her name Princess Almary Varnum, Gary loved her very much, but needless to say we won't be naming a kid after her). Gary loves these get-togethers, and of course even after almost 5 years in the family, I'm still trying to figure out who is who and just how are we related again?
The first order of business is that everyone eats... alot. After we are all stuffed and can't move, then the big kids play softball, and the mom's hide Easter Eggs for the little ones this year we hid 122 hard boiled eggs, and then another 50 plastic eggs. There are always a couple of price eggs, one of which Ruth found this year. It had a dollar in it. She doesn't understand the value of it, she just liked opening and closing the eggs over and over. Ruth caught on very quickly to what she was suppose to be doing. She was too little for this last year, so this was her first chance to hunt eggs. She found 19 eggs. Britt still needed hints and to be pointed in the right direction. Of course, about half way through hunting eggs, he saw the horses in the pasture and went to talk to them. He enjoyed hunting eggs, but he was just fine with talking to the horses and cows too. He found 12 eggs.
This year they actually waited to play softball till after the egg hunt. I opted out again this year, after much protest, I probably won't be able to get away with it again next year, unless I'm immensely pregnant or dead. They are way too competitive and serious about it for me. They are absolutely hysterical to watch though. I believe they had more errors that hits today, and that's really saying something since almost everyone hit each at bat and well over half of those got on base. Justin was fun to watch bat, because he was taking the bat and wacking down on the ball almost like you would spike a volley ball down, and do you know he did it with enough force to get on base every time, no pop flies for him. Dusty injuried a ligament this season (his senior year, you gotta feel bad for him), so he was only batting one handed sometimes even left handed and still managed to hit every at bat, but once - unbelievable. Heather got some amazingly high flies looking into the sun, and Gary and James had a major collision at home plate. Gary was catching and he wasn't going to move, and poor James's knee shows the battle scars. They went into the final inning tied 7 to 7, and Gary's team managed to make it home on a dropped then over thrown ball to win. It was crazy to watch.
