The Joy of My Salvation

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. ~Habakkuk 3:18

I need to brag on my brother a minute, the kid's Uncle Benji.

Our finances have gone from bad to worse since last June, when Gary was laid off. He's had a few jobs since then, but nothing permanent. We've gotten by on unemployment, food stamps, gifts from fellow Church members, and loans from our parents. To be honest when I do the budget, I'm still unsure how everything has gotten paid so far. We are incredibly blessed with a good support system.

However, things have gotten to the point that we aren't sure if we can keep the house, or if we will have to sell it. So we needed to gut even the little things left in the budget. Things like dog food. The dogs were already not getting heart worm preventative, vet care, or grooming appointments. We had long since done away with eating out as a family. We are trying to only make one trip to town a week, other than Church on Sunday. So, I finally agreed we needed to rehome the dogs, for them and for the budget. It was a hard decision for me, because I'm an animal person. I have had Scout from a pup, and worked with him a lot. I got Ember as a rescue at a year, and never wanted her to not have a home again.

Telling the kids, over supper though, was the worst part. You see Scout is Britt's dog. He was his brother, when he didn't have any brothers. He is who has had read to for years, to overcome dyslexia. He is the one who comes up with new things to train Scout to do. He is the one who begs for the dog to sleep in his bed at night. Like any 14 year old boy there are times that the dog is neglected a bit in light of video games, but Scout is his dog. Ember is Ruth's dog. She has worked hard to train her, because Ember has a harder time focusing than Scout, and because we didn't have her from the beginning. She sits and talks with her when she won't share things with the rest of us. She has plans of eventually training her to do agility. Like any 12 year old girl there are times she complains about brushing her out or taking her out, but Ember is her dog. Telling them was awful. Ruth teared up, but didn't say anything until she went to rant to Ember the next afternoon. Britt on the other hand had wracking sobs, and offered to sell every thing he had to keep the dogs.

Britt even went to Mister the next day to ask for jobs to do for money. Mister gave him some jobs, but explained that we needed the money he earned to go toward the mortgage, not the dogs. He said he understood, but he was still praying for a way to keep the dogs. Britt then took the money to update their rabies shots and county license. I wanted to tell him the Lord doesn't really care about two dogs, but how could I discourage him like that. However, it appears that the Lord cares about two dogs, because He cares about a little boy, who kept praying full of faith that something would work out.

Earlier this week, my brother called out of the blue while I was driving home. He does every so often just to talk to the kids, after talking a bit he told me that he wanted to take the dogs for the kids, as long as we needed. He had rearranged some stuff with work and the house, and felt like he could take them on. He loves his nieces and nephews, and has constantly proven to have a big heart for them. He knew what the dogs meant to them. He offered to take off Friday and drive down for them, and then drive back home with them on Saturday, since he would have Monday, as President's Day and a federal holiday, to recoup. I was floored.  While no less of a blessing, it isn't surprising that our parents and our Church want to help us out. But I never would have expected my littlest brother to be able to do anything to help us out.

I cannot begin to describe how happy the kids were. Britt told me, I just kept praying for a way to keep them. He then had a long talk with Scout telling him about Uncle Benji, telling him bye, and who knows what else. Ruth squealed, and couldn't believe it. Rebecca needed clarification that it meant we wouldn't have to sell them at all. Kate was almost as happy as Britt, and promptly came home and laid on Scout the way she does and told him how great Uncle Benji was and how the trip would be a fun adventure. The twins just cheered because everyone else was in the car.

Benjamin and Daddy drove down yesterday. He's already got them a grooming appointment, since they are badly in need of one. He asked me to write up everything I could think of about them to help him out, so I put together a notebook. He took the dog training book for trouble shooting and an old baby gate to block the stairs. He wanted their vet records and anything else I had. He asked questions and loved on them.

As they got ready to leave today, I stressed to him I was hoping in 2 or 3 months we would be back on our feet, as Gary has started a new job, and will be on his own starting Monday. However, since it is solely commission, it'll take some time to get back up and running and caught up, so hopefully we can stay in our home. He told me again, to not worry about it, he was prepared to keep them as long as necessary. To not worry about them.

To everyone else they might just be dogs, but while not family in the sense that my kids are, they are part of our family. They matter a great deal to us. They are part of our household. Sure they have bad habits like counter surfing at times, and jumping the fence, but they have far more endearing qualities, like faithful loyalty and loving attention. And it means far more than words can convey that Uncle Benji cared enough about a small thing, among all of the stress we are under, to do this for the kids and me.

This view is even more special this year than in years past. We have been through unemployment at Christmas time but the kids were mostly too young to notice that they had a few presents from the grandparents and that was it. After 5 months of unemployment and eating through our emergency fund I had just resigned myself to another such Christmas. I know and they know it isn't about gifts but I do so enjoy watch them open them and really spoiling them once a year, since money is always so tight. And I felt bad that this was just one more thing that Covid was going to ruin for them this year. I knew some would be disappointed and take it well, but a couple wouldn't do as well. I was trying to figure out what we could do for nothing, after all in the grand scheme of things this was minor. We have food and still have the house. We aren't yet behind on any bills. When someone at Church reached out and told me to still let them make a list that the Church wanted to do Christmas for them. Other than a couple of things that they found for each other everything under this tree was a gift of love from our Church family. It is humbling and yet makes me feel like the most loved people out there. These people who also gave us a huge baby shower to get ready for the twins, and have helped us with expenses here and there. Rebecca looked at the tree last night after I had wrapped everything and said, "We have never had so many big presents! This is going to be the best Christmas ever!" It is, just not for the reason she thinks.

Sister Lydia and several of the other sisters at Church put together a baby shower for us for the twins.  Because apparently you only have twins after getting rid of all the baby things you once had.  Really though, we are so grateful for our Church family they are so good to us.

  • We both pull for orange and blue we just can't agree on the shade of orange and blue. I am an Auburn fan and he is a Gator fan. And so far he doesn't have a kid on his side. Out of sympathy I dressed #mylittlefox🦊 in a gator shirt this afternoon but she asked me if it was her "Au-urn tirt?" The Church threw a shower for the twins today and they went all out decorating. I told them they were more excited by two than their Daddy was. 😂 We got some diapers, cute clothes, and other needful things off of our registry. Almost ready for their arrival in 7 weeks or less.

We had a ton of fun, playing games, eating pie of every kind, and visiting while opening gifts too.  I had to joke with the sisters that they were far more excited about us having 2 children than Gary was.  The Auburn vs. Gator theme was alot of fun too though.  It will be fun to see over the next several years which team becomes their favorite.

One thing is for sure these boys aren't going to want for any diapers or clothes for a good long while now.

Ever since I can remember, Daddy has loved astronomy.  He woke us up in the middle of the night to see comets, taught us the constellations, showed us how to find the planets, and always shared his amazement at this distant part of God's creation.  We have always had telescopes and star charts.  He always got an Astronomy magazine in the mail.  Because star gazing in North Alabama is best in the winter, we often had on pajamas and winter coats trying to stay warm to see the space station fly over, or hope to make it long enough to see a meteor shower.  However, one thing I have never seen (and Daddy either for that matter) was a solar eclipse.

Daddy's been talking about this event for more than a year.  And we all started trying to tentatively plan something around this time last year.  We didn't finalize plans until shortly before Katherine was born.  But we all knew we really wanted to see this, and we didn't want to just see a partial eclipse, but since we were SO close, we knew we wanted to see totality.

Yesterday we all met in Smyrna Tennessee, with plans to drive up to Cedars of Lebannon state park this morning.  It worked out marvelous.  Britt who is always complaining that we never do nature walks in the woods anymore (kinda hard in S. Florida where there are no woods), got to take a long hour or so meander down several trails with me and Rebecca.  The kids played with some velcro balls, like we kids and cousins use to use hanging out all day for the balloon races.  We pulled out a frisbee which Ruth lost in the woods and a kickball, that Neela liked playing with as much as the kids.  Katherine napped on a blanket much of the time.  And ever so often we checked in on the status of the eclipse watching it get closer and closer to complete.

I've read about solar eclipses, watched videos, seen pictures.  But it didn't REMOTELY compare to seeing one in person. In the roughly hour leading up to totality.  You could gradually feel the temp drop, and tell that the sun wasn't as bright as usual.  The shadows began to have a sharper contrast like near sunset, but they don't lengthen any.  As more time passed we saw Venus appear high in the sky.  In the last minute or so before totality, it goes from daylight to twilight almost immediately.  MUCH faster than any of us expected.  As you look around at the horizon it is a redish purplish color like at the very end of day, but it's on all sides not only in the west.  The crickets came alive, and then we saw Jupiter and Arcturus in the sky.  But the most amazing part was seeing the Sun's corona.  It wasn't at all as expected.  The sky was a deep rich navy, and it was the faintest feathery white.  It appeared to move almost like a flare or almost like a white sheer curtain moving in a breeze.  It doesn't really move, it's only the way the light passes through the atmosphere, but it was stunning.  It was an unbelievable view of a portion of God's handiwork that is impossible to view at any other time.

It was the fastest 2 minutes and 15 seconds of my life.  I attempted to snap a couple of pictures, but the quality isn't much.  Daddy captured a few pictures with his good camera, and while they look good, they just don't look like the eclipse.  In the photo at the top the three spikes along the light, were all we were able to see, much fainter, the rest glowing is a flare on the lenses, and that's after I edited to dim them as much as possible.  The bottom picture, He took as the moon was moving back out, and it sorta gives you the idea of the diamond ring phase. Though again, most of what you see is a flare on the lenses.

It was a really moving experience.  I just can't explain it.  I didn't expect it to be so amazing.  As the sun came back into view, it was brilliantly bright almost instantaneously.  And we all had to grab the glasses again.  The kids thought it was pretty amazing too.  Ruth was probably the most interesting to listen too.  While they all would look and play and then look again.  She did the most, and every time was an excited exclamation.  "Look it looks like a cookie someone took a bite out of!"  Then, "It's half way gone!"  And, "It's just like the Cheshire cat's grin side ways!"  Then "It's just the yellow in a rainbow!"  And finally there was cheering and giggling, and shouting from the kids and Grumps and everyone in the entire park.  It was a sight to behold.  After totality, much of the park left, and we went back to the car and sat around having a picnic lunch.  Benjamin and Grumps, and I all watched the very end nearly an hour later, as many of the cars finally were gone.  I kinda mournfully said, it just looks like a wheel of cheese with a tiny nibble out of it, and then it was perfectly round again, back to normal.

We had a great time, and it was even better getting to do it with Daddy.  As Gary and I drove back to the hotel with 4 kids asleep in the back.  I told him, it reminded me of the verse in  II Corinthians 13:12, "For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known."  I imagine in that split second as we leave this life and move into the next, that it will be like going from the total eclipse to the brilliance of full light again.  And that thought was beyond comforting and moving.  I can't wait for that day, and I so do look forward to that knowing.
