The Joy of My Salvation

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. ~Habakkuk 3:18

It's way past time for a new update on the prayer request list, so I'm here today to provide it. :)

Granna has had another set back. She initially broke her shoulder about a month and a half ago. She was moved over to a rehab center in order to help with the healing. When they went back two weeks later to see the specialist, it was determined that she was going to need surgery because it wasn't healing properly on its on. They did surgery and sent her back to the rehab center where she has been going through therapy. Just two days ago during therapy the shoulder dislocated and she is back up at Plant City hospital. She may need to undergo surgery again, as it doesn't appear to be healing correctly. **1:30 update - Granna saw the surgeon this morning and they were able to reset her shoulder without surgery. She is wearing something similar to a sling to keep her arm close to her body all the time, for a while until they are sure it is healing. Then she will go back to rehab.**

Nate Ferrel just got back from his 6 month check up at the Houston Mito Clinic. They received alot of good news while they were out there. They are making a few changes to his medicine routine, but all in it's looking like they are being able to successfully manage the disease at this time. He's such a funny little man, and Britt likes to follow him around Sunday afternoons as they contemplate what mischief they can get into next.

Grandmother has done really well with her shoulder, but I would ask you to keep remembering her in your prayers. She has had a bit of stomach trouble off and on in the past, but it appears some of the medicine that they were giving her to manage the pain and help with her shoulder have aggravated her stomach. She's having alot of the symptoms that my mother had a little over a year ago - she just doesn't feel much like eating and isn't very comfortable.

There are three new request I'm adding this week...

Bro. Allen and Sis. Lona Cook are some dear Primitive Baptist friends from West Texas. I met them several years ago through my grandparents. I have affectionately referred to them as my "God - grandparents" since they are old enough to be my grandparents and have been such a Godly encouragement. Brother Allen has always encouraged me to sit with the deacons and ministers at meetings and learn. Like my father and grandfather he always encouraged me to study and ask questions. I have learned alot from listening to him and Granddaddy discuss scripture. They made the very special effort to come all the way to Florida when Gary and I got married, which meant quite alot to me. Brother Allen is in the last stages of prostate and is in alot of pain. He is ready to go home, and while I know I will miss him; I would ask you to pray for comfort for Sister Lona and rest for Brother Allen.

Jon and Amanda Mizel just found out that they are expecting again, go here to read their story.

Finally if everything goes well in a few weeks Bro. Randy and Sis. Paula will be adopting a brand new baby boy. We would ask you all to pray for this dear couple who Gary and I admire so much. They are always an encouragement to others, offer good advise, and are just a joy to be around. They are wonderful parents and very much want a second child. We ask for your prayers in this matter.

Finally a note on us, Gary has had several interesting opportunities in the last month. First, we discovered that there was an internship with Bayer coming open in Florida that he was a perfect fit for that would provide him a good opportunity to fill the internship part of the program early, and might provide a permanent position next summer. Then, we attended a conference where Gary was able to interview with 9 different companies for more than 20 job openings. There were several positive experiences, and one that was very interested in Gary and conducted a second interview. Finally, there is a professor on campus who has been very impressed with Gary's work and due to his background would like to offer him a research assistance ship to determine the most cost-effective replacement for methyl bromide (and which gives the best coverage). This is something that Gary did a little of at Crop and would like to do more of, and would give him some very valuable and marketable skills in the strawberry industry after he graduates. The catch is that he would have to slightly change his degree from a Masters of Agribusiness to a Masters of Science in Agribusiness this means at the earliest he would be graduating in December and he would be required to write a thesis.

Like I said, we have had many exciting opportunities, and up until this point we've been pursuing all options. However, soon we are going to have to make a decision in which direction to go. We received word on Tuesday that Bayer had chosen someone else for their internship. (Gary thinks it's because they already had housing, and he had the baggage of a family, and the living accommodations really weren't set up for that.) So far we haven't heard much back from the job interviews, and may not for sometime. However, the decision about changing degrees will need to be made fairly quickly and if we go that route, Gary won't be able to look for or take full time work. He will be going to school full time, essentially be working full time doing the leg work for this research assistance ship, and writing a thesis in there some where. Gary is praying for clear guidance on which route to take, and we would like to ask that you continue to remember us.

We had Halloween for the kids this weekend. Next weekend we plan to make the first school free eekend (or at least do as little homework as possible) since the semester started. We are going to the panhandle for the weekend to hear Bro. David Montgomery preach. We haven't been off to a meeting since the spring, and Gary feels like he needs to recharge his batteries a bit, so we are planning to take a small break before the bulk of his group projects are due between now and Thanksgiving. As result, we aren't sure how late it might be before we get back next Sunday, so we did Halloween this weekend.
First order of business was to find a pumpkin. Amber told us about a church down the road from them, that had a great little pumpkin patch set up, so off we went. Britt mostly wandered around looking at all the pumpkins and picking up mulch and leaves. He kept calling them "kin-kin." Meanwhile Ruth rode around in style and napped.

We had the most fun when Britt discovered the slide. We just sat there watching him over and over. He was just giggling. Made me grin in amazement at how such a simple thing could not only hold his attention for so long, but give him complete joy. We eventually had to tear him away so we could leave.

That afternoon while Gary napped we decorated. Sara put up the spider webs and Britt doesn't like the way they feel at all. Then after Lydia made baked pumpkin seeds , so and Britt played awhile. For my first attempt I think the pumpkin I carved turned out pretty well.
Sunday evening we met Amber and Jay and the kiddos up at the same Church for their Fall Festival and Trunk or Treat. Britt went as a cow and Ruth as a pumpkin. Abby was a bee, but because of her huge wings Britt kept insisting she was a butterfly. Emma informed me that she was Repunsilla but before long her beautiful long clip in braid fell out, and she decided that she didn't need it after all. Nate went as a gator and Britt kept randomly pointing to him and saying "ga ga" and clapping which is his rendition of "Go Gators"Several people just ohhed and ahhed over Ruth, but she was oblivious and napped through the entire experience. Britt on the other hand enjoyed mooing at everyone when they asked him if he was a cow. At first, he didn't want to get to close and Gary got candy out for him, but before long he figured that he wanted the brightest colored pieces as a result we don't have many snickers but we have tons of laffy taffies now. He quiet forgot his manners though, as he failed to thank anyone for candy. They also had a little petting zoo there. Britt liked the sheep best of all and walked right up to it and patted it and kept saying "Baa." They also had a couple of rabbits, some goats, and three chickens. After the petting zoo Britt played on the playground for a little bit before we headed home. He was ready to head home after that, as he was one hot little cow in that well insulated outfit. We had a great time!

Britt loves to be read too. It's one of those things that I'm most proud to be instilling in my child, a love for books. Reading and books can open a whole new world of doors. They can take you to a magical far away place, or they can teach you how to fix the sink. I love to read, and I love that Britt loves to be read too. Sometimes I have to mentally remind myself of that when we are reading "Duck, Duck, Moose" for the ba-gillionth time, or when I walk into his room to find all 3000 of his books in the floor for the 33 time. Times like this make it all worth while though...

Sara and Lydia came to visit us over the weekend. I spent Friday cleaning up the house and getting ready for them, while Britt demolished, I mean played in his room. I told him after his nap that there would be a surprise downstairs that someone was coming to see him. Well, I guess I should have told the little man that, because every few minutes he kept getting up coming to me and asking "down?" which is what he says when he is ready to go downstairs in the morning. By the time it was 3:30 he still hadn't taken a nap, so I gave up. When he got down stairs he was so excited to find Sara and Lydia here. Oh boy, did he grin and laugh and flirt. He was nothing but trouble. All weekend he wanted Lydia to read to him and play blocks with him and he brought her every leaf and stick he could find. He spent all weekend calling her "Lee-Lee." He cried when she left and called and looked for her this morning.
Britt wasn't the only one who had a good time. I especially enjoyed seeing Sara and trying to catch up with all of the news from Little Union. We stayed up way too late on Friday playing dominoes (which worked out fine since Ruth thought going to bed before 4 was a bad idea). Then on Saturday after we picked out a pumpkin the girls helped me decorate for Halloween. Sara did all the cool spider webs and such, while I carved the pumpkin, and Lydia cooked yummy pumpkin seeds. It was nice to be able to have some girl talk. We hope they come back to see us really soon.

Tonight is one of those nights where, as I watch my firstborn sleeping, it's definately worth it to be a parent. It's one of those bittersweet moments, where I realize that Britt really isn't a baby any more, but a little boy, who isn't so little any more. Last night, we put together the toddler bed that we borrowed from Gary's parents (since we still need the crib), and today was Britt's first time in a bed. Naptime went pretty well, all things considered. After 30 mins and 3 spankings, he gave up and decided to go to sleep. Bedtime tonight was a little more difficult - a little more than 2 hours later and a few spankings for jumping on the bed and he went to sleep.
On one hand he looked so old, trying to sneak, flirt, or negotiate his way out of bed. He's saying more and more words, and while lots of them aren't even close to correct, we are able to understand him far easier than just a few weeks ago. With his crinkly blue eyes so much like his Daddy's and his little boy hair cut, he doesn't look like a baby any more. He has some huge feet and when he stretches out on the bed he looks so big. Then on the other hand, he still seems so little. The way he has a meltdown like the world is going to pass him by at naptime, the way he obviously doesn't know how to sleep in a bed, and the way he chews on taggie or his fingers when he's oh so sleepy.
The crib was one of the few things from babyhood that I wasn't really ready to give up. No more bottles and no more diapers are things that make me want to jump for joy. But somehow moving him out of his crib where he has slept since he was 5 weeks old, makes it official that he's growing up. However, it's time. He's started trying to climb out of the crib, and I would rather move him before he figures it out and falls. It's moments like these where I want to scoop him up and rock him, but I know better. I know that he'll wake up, be bouncing off the walls till midnight and rather than be the cuddly baby that I want to hang on to, he'll be that wild toddler that we have come to know. So I just watch him sleep, and I'm so glad that he's a healthy, strong, growing boy.

This past weekend Daddy had a meeting in Orlando. Me and Momma and Ruth went along with him, but we did fun things instead of going to Daddy's meetings. Daddy says he had lots of fun like a kid in a candy shop, but I doubt he had as much fun as I did. I don't know anything about candy shops (which Momma says is a very good thing) but I can tell you about Bass Pro Shop.
Momma dropped Daddy off at his meeting on Thursday and then we went over to our hotel to check in. It was a really nice place with lots of water and ducks. It had a really cool pool too that I wanted to get in, but I never made it down there. Anyway, on Friday Memaw and Mister came over just to play with me for the weekend. It was wonderful!
Memaw brought movies like Jungle Book for me to watch and we had lots of fun looking out the windows and stuff, but I had the most fun with Mister. I liked watching the ducks and turtles around the hotel and Mister never failed to help me find them. Then he found a momma duck with 11 baby ducks (Momma said they are called ducklings). He was really funny because he helped me try to catch one. We almost had him too, but Memaw called us off.
Mister said if we were going to catch a duck, then we needed a pot to cook it in, so on Saturday he took me to his and Daddy's favorite store - Bass Pro Shop. It was the most wonderful place in the world! First we went over to the big fish tank to see all the huge fish. Some were as big as me. Then we found a guy who had a 4 and 1/2 ft gator. I didn't really want to touch it, but I did finally poke the tip of his nose. He also had a big snake, but I wasn't interested in it at all.
Next we walked around and saw all kinds of animals. I found a truck ball cover that looked like a deer that I carried around with me for a while. Then I found bunches of deer on the walls, and even a "ous" (moose). Then Mister stopped and looked at cast iron pots and pans and stuff for a while. So I went to show Momma all of the boats. Next, Memaw pushed me around in the buggy while I pointed out all the animals and told her what they say. We saw a plastic owl, some decoy ducks, a boar the size of our buggy (that Momma told me was like a pig), we saw a dog chasing birds (Momma said they were pheasants), and we saw a "cacoon" (raccoon).
Then Mister caught up to us and we walked by the arcade where there was a hunting game. We watched him play and I looked around at all the animals there were stuffed gators, and "cats" (bobcats), and "baas" (Momma said they were mountain goats, but they looked like sheep to me. Momma even saw some armadillos, but I was so busy looking around I must have missed it. I saw a new animal too, a possum. I just smiled and said yeah, every time Momma tried to get me to say what it was though.
The only thing that I didn't like at all was this great big shark that they had hanging from the ceiling. Mister showed it to me, and Momma wanted to get a picture, but when Mister got me out, I hung on to him for dear life, and wanted back into the buggy. I'm not stupid, Memaw showed me the story about Nemo that morning, and those sharks were trying to eat everyone. I didn't want to get eaten.
When it was time to go, they were making key chains outside, so Mister and I sat down on the bench to make a leather key chain. First, he held it and let me tap the hammer on the metal piece that leaves a print, but he said I didn't hit it hard enough. He hit it several times and I got to get another mallet and I hit on the table. We had a great time together.

My son is rotten. He has this strange habit of taking one bite out of something and moving on to the next item. He will sit next to me and eat a bite out of one of my fries, then sit it back on the plate and get another fry and take one bite out of it, he proceeds this way, until all of my fries have one end missing. He does this with my chips too... when he isn't shoving them into his mouth whole. He does it with lots of things. This morning I was sitting and feeding Ruth and heard him rustling around on the other side of the bed. Every few moments I would hear the drawer open, and then shut again. Since nothing was crashing and breaking I left him be until Ruth got done eating. Then this is what I found...

Ruth,

Today you are two months old. Daddy has had to work hard to stretch those diapers around you over the last week, we are wondering if you will be over 12 lbs at your next doctor's appointment on the 25th. As soon as we use up the last of the size 1 diapers that we have open, I suppose I will be swapping the others out for size 2 so that Daddy can stop complaining about how he thinks they are too tight. I haven't been able to tell that you are getting heavier, but you are definitely getting longer. Alot of your 0-3 month stuff has been packed up, because it just won't stretch enough to fasten. I've been putting off moving you up a size, but it won't be much longer, which is a pity, since you haven't even come close to wearing all the 0-3 stuff you have.

Your face has rounded out alot since you were born, and you are getting to be a cute little thing. Of course, about the time that I think you are starting to look a little cuter, like a little girl, you have lost even more of your hair. You don't have almost any left on top. I can't get a clip in bow in it any more. You still have a fair amount in the back, but you'll probably lose it too. I just hope it stays dark. We can definitely tell that your eyes are blue now, but they are so dark that we wonder if they might eventually turn green or brown. You still have super chubby checks that leaves Uncle Benji calling Britt and you - Chip and Chipette.

Your sleeping at night hasn't improved any over the last month. About 75% of the time we end up having to put you in the swing to sleep, because you wont stay down in the cradle. You are still waking up to eat once in the night and some nights we manage to get you back in the cradle afterward, but most nights you end up sleeping on my chest or back in the swing if you are too fussy. During the day you sleep fine in your bed, or on our bed (you seem to like a real mattress better), or even in the floor. I have no idea why you won't do the same at night.

You are smiling a bit more, though you are still pretty stingy with the smiles. I can't seem to get a picture of you smiling. You smile at Daddy most, and at Britt alot, but all you want to do when I have you is eat, so I've yet to get a smile. You are getting very good at lifting your head and even part of your chest off of the floor when you are on your stomach. You are a good listener now too. You turn when you hear Daddy come in from school. And as Britt speaks the language that only he understands and dances around the room, your eyes follow him and you look like you are studying him very intently. You also get upset when we all go to the table to eat supper if you aren't brought along to sit next to the table in your car seat. You spend dinner turning your head back and forth between all of us when we are talking.

We love you,
Momma

I don't forget to blog you know, I'm just busy. There are so many things to do in a day that I don't always get around to blogging. You know, I have lots of block towers to destroy, books to read, and cars to drive around the floor. Somewhere in all of that I have to find time to drink milk and take a nap. I also need to watch Patpul and Pooh everyday. Sometimes I even get to watch "Elmo" and "Bibir" (Big Bird). Other days, like today, I watch videos on my friends blogs. I especially like to go and watch video of "Osh", "Ames and Aury", and "Abby, Amma, and Ate." Most days I play outside in the "un" (sun), there are lots of "leaf, ticks, and rac" (leaves, sticks, and rocks) to examine. I try to out do myself to see how "dirdir" (dirty) I can get before I take a bath and get "kean". After my bath I have to eat and then brush my "teef". Finally before heading to bed I have to dance some and wrestle with Daddy in the floor. It's hard work being a toddler. So you see it's not that I forget all of you, it's just that I'm so busy and I don't like to sit still very long to type blogs. That's what Momma is for... when she's not busy trying to chase me down...

The above picture of Britt was taken March 5 of last year and the below picture of Ruth was taken yesterday. They look alot alike, the biggest difference to me is their eyes are shaped completely different. One thing is for sure they look just like Gary not me. (Gary at 1 month old, July of 1979)

Daddy wants to be called Grumps. According to Mother he picked out this name before I was even born. So far he has had almost no luck getting Britt to say Grumps. Occasionally Britt says something that sounds a little like it starts with a G sound. So to my surprise this morning, I heard him saying "Grumps" clear as can be, and I turned around. Our screen saver on the computer cycles through all the photos I have saved on the hard drive, and sure enough it was going through a few pictures from last Christmas. Of course when I pulled out the camera, Britt went back to mumbling something that sounded like "jumps" or "gunts." Anyway, I thought Grumps and Ahna might get a kick out of this...

One of Britt's favorite little movies to watch is "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree." I'm sure most everyone knows the generic plot line. Pooh likes honey, Pooh runs out of honey, Pooh tries to get honey from a tree using a balloon while pretending to be a little black rain cloud (of course), it doesn't work, so Pooh goes to see Rabbit, Pooh eats all of Rabbit's honey and gets stuck while trying to leave. At the end of all of this, when Pooh finally budges Rabbit runs/hops to go and get Christopher Robin, who leads a wonderful parade as they sing about pulling Pooh out. (No, I haven't had to watch this movie WAAAAAAAAY too much). As Christopher Robin leads everyone he is marching and banging on his drum. Britt has begun to do the same...

Granddaddy reminded me on the phone the other night that as much as they enjoy seeing pictures of Ruth I need to share some video of her. Which brought about a startling revelation... I haven't taken any video of her. I know, bad Momma. She's picking up her head really well now, and if you don't watch it when you have her sitting up, she'll launch herself in one direction or another. She tries to sit up but of course it's too early for all of that. Gary thinks she managed to roll over the other evening, but it's not been repeated so it may have just been a fluke...

Saturday, a week ago, CALS (The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, but they pronounce it cows) had what they call tailgatoring before the Kentucky-Florida game. It's like tailgating except for Florida fans. Since Daddy is in CALS he got to go for free, so he took Momma, me, and Ruth along. We all got dressed up, even Momma. Daddy got her 3 Gator shirts. Lets just say that she was about as thrilled as Ruth looks. There were lots of interesting things to see on our way. We walked, well Momma and Daddy walked several blocks, I rode in my stroller in style. There was lots and lots of orange and blue. I didn't know what to think of all of it. We stopped by and visited Uncle Hank for a few minutes. They had the camper and were tailgating. When we actually got to the CALS meeting they had tons of things going on. They had lots and lots of BBQ and they had cake and tea too. It was wonderful. Some people talked while we ate, but I didn't really listen to them. Afterward, Daddy and I walked around and saw all the different Ag related booths. There was a wildlife conservation one with a little alligator. I knew what he was suppose to say, but he didn't say anything because they had his mouth taped shut. I did get to pet him though, and then I poked him in the eye. He didn't really seem to enjoy that. Next there was a bug booth, with a ginormous centipede. Daddy told me it was a "patpul" but I didn't believe him and I wouldn't touch that ugly thing. Daddy wouldn't touch it either, in fact he said he wouldn't squish it with his shoe, he said he needed a ten foot shovel to squish it with. It was really gross. Then we went and got Momma and Ruth and I showed her the pigs. They weren't very big, not like the pigs I've seen at Mister's house. Momma said that's because they were piglets. I liked to pet them in the box, but boy did they squeal when they were picked up.
Then guess who else we found? It was Kelsey. She came all the way up from Plant City, just to see me. Well, Momma said she was doing other things too, but I'm sure she came to see me. She told us all about her new calves, and I can't wait to go and see them next time we are down there. Me and Kelsey had a good time that evening, after Momma and Daddy left to have a few hours to themselves. I told her that she should come back to visit soon. It was a very good day.

Granna had surgery this morning on her shoulder because it wasn't healing correctly. The doctor seems to think that she'll be in the hospital at least another day or two, before heading back to the rehab center. Hopefully in a few weeks she will be feeling much better and have better use of her arm.

Grandmother is doing much better after her shoulder surgery as well. They fixed a torn rotor cuff, and she is doing some therapy in order to strengthen it now.

Today Gary got some good news. To finish up his degree he has to get an internship. The great thing about alot of these internships is, if the company likes you and likes your work they often offer a permanent position afterward. Tonight Gary went to a meeting about getting an internship. A lady from Bayer CropScience was there, and she talked about Temik. She asked several questions and Gary was the only one there that knew anything about the product. She then announced that they would be filling 5 internship positions, from Dec 17 through April. They offer decent pay, but the really nice thing is that they come with a company vehicle, company laptop, and they pay for housing. We are hoping that this might be the break that we have been looking for. Applications have to be in by Oct 7, and interviews will be on Oct 12. We would ask for everyone's prayer in the matter, so that we might have clear direction on where to go next. If we get this Gary would be working full time and taking 3 classes next semester, do able for 4 months, but not easy to say the least.
