The Joy of My Salvation

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. ~Habakkuk 3:18

Mister with all five of his grandbabies.
Last Saturday was Mosaic's family day.  Mosaic is the company that Gary's daddy works for.  They do alot for the men that work for them.  They have the spring family day, and in the fall each year, they give every one tickets and food vouchers for a Ray's game.  Dad's been there since Gary was small, and they have gone most years to the get together.  This was the first time I went.  I'm thinking we were in Alabama one time, and sick another time or two, and then of course we were in Gainesville this time last year.

They had alot for the kids to do.  They had a great almost new playground, that Gary and the rest of the sibs all complained about.  Things along the line of "why didn't they have one of these when we were kids" or "this would have made it way better when we were coming."  It was a really nice playground, and in addition to all the regular play things, they also had a basketball shooting game and a bounce house there for the day.  The big kids played basketball some, while the little kids played on the bounce house.  Lilli as always had no fear, she was the first to scale it (even with no one for her to have watched), and she convinced Britt to come along, even though he wouldn't have on his own.  He got stuck at the top and Momma had to come and rescue him.

They had BBQ chicken and ribs, hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch.  We all ate great, even if the kids were too excited with everything they could see and hear to eat much.  The girls went to dance with the dj, and let me tell you Julia has the best dance moves, she was cracking me up.  Lilli dances all crazy with all this raw energy (like everything else she does).  Gary and I took all 5 of them on the hay ride while everyone else finished eating

After the hayride, James and Heather entered the cornhole toss tournament.  They ended up finishing 5th.  They apparently had the right idea, according to Gary, because they got a kid free afternoon while we chased the oldest four around, and Memaw watched a sleeping Ruth.  Gary says we are totally doing that next year.  We had a good time watching them though.  The first stop was for face painting.  The wait in line took FOREVER.  Really, I'm completely serious.  It was mostly I stood in line, while the others took turns walking with different kids to burn some energy.  Brystal was the only one that waited the whole time.  She stood right at the table as still as could be and watched each of the 9 children in front of her.  Lilli on the other hand would flit over, lay all over the poor lady doing the face painting and then run off again.  Julia and Britt took turns either laying in the stroller or running in circles on the bridge nearby.

Brystal and Lilli both chose to be a princess, so they had crowns painted on their foreheads and glitter put on the cheeks.  Julia picked cherries for her hand.  Britt once again did something that he probably would have never done, if he hadn't watched Lilli go first.  He decided he wanted his face painted too, and choose Spiderman.  (The one and only superhero he knows, and he can't stop talking about, which is just a little ironic when you think about it.  He has no idea what Spiderman does or anything about him, except what he looks like.)  We had a great time, though I for one was wore out and hot when we left to go home.  The kids must have felt likewise because after a quick bath they took a 2 hour nap.

The Sunday that we came back from Alabama was a crazy busy day. We left my parents around just after 10pm central time, and made it to our house at 15 till 10am eastern time. We had just enough time to bath, change clothes and load back up in the car. Staying focused during church was a little of a challenge with our two squirmy kids and Lilli sitting with us that morning. Plus we were obviously tired. Thankfully Grandmaw Bea and Poppa J offered to take the kids to their house for a few hours that afternoon so we could get a nap in. Britt asked after me a few times, but he settled down and was really good for them, thank goodness. Gary and I got a 3 hour nap, and then we were ready to go again.

Bro. Ralph and Sis. Sue invited everyone over for a sing at their place. It's been forever since we've had a sing with the Church at someone's home. In fact, I'm thinking the last one we had was over at the Miller's back when Britt was just a few months old. Anyway, a sing was long over due. We were the last ones to arrive (after all they were visiting while we were napping), so thye started singing not long after we arrived. We sung about, oh, an hour I guess, before we broke for snacks. Sis. Sue and her daughter Sis. Elin really put together a great spread, everything was so good. Of course we all visited after that. One of the highlights of the evening was catching up with Bro. Joe and Sis. Elin (who we don't see anywhere near often enough). Gary has said if we end up getting one of these jobs in Indiana being near them would be worth the move and the miserable cold winters. Of course as always, the evening was a reminder of just how blessed we are with Church family and times of fellowship.

After Britt got done showing his cow, we headed up to Alabama to see Grumps and Ahna. I wanted to show a cow too, but when I snuck under the fence to get into the arena Momma caught me and yanked me back out. Maybe next year.
We spent a busy week with Grumps and Ahna. It started with pancakes, and having them all to ourselves on Saturday while Momma and Daddy caught up on sleep. Then Sunday we had church all day, but that was ok, because it means that everyone got to hold me all day long. Then on Monday, Ahna was out of school, so Grumps took off too. That day we got to play in the house, and watch movies, and go dig around in Ahna's flowerbeds. On Tuesday, we spent the whole day with Grandmother and Granddaddy's house while everyone else was at work. Granddaddy got us some ice cream that afternoon and then we went to the park. On Wednesday we went to school to visit Ahna and I had fun with everyone I met. Britt was a little grumpy, but everyone loved me. Then we went to see Momma's friend that I am named after Ashley, and her new baby. Britt decided that he wanted to take her home with him. I liked her, but I don't think I liked her that much. On Thursday we went with Grandmother to go meet Aunt Melanie and Maghen for their hair appointments. That was fun. Then that evening we went to the Park and Momma talked with Kristi and we played with her kids. On Friday we ate breakfast with Grandmother and Granddaddy and we picked up some leaves for Grandmother before Grandma and Aunt Rachel and Emily came down from Tennessee. We had fun all night, and then on Saturday went to the park and Emily read to me.

The best part of the trip was laying around in the living room floor at the end of the night and Grumps tickling us. Britt told me about this funny thing that Grumps taught him, and so I had him show me too, but I can't figure out how to do it. Sometimes Unca Benji or Unca Matt would play with us with blocks or some of the stuffed animals. And every night Ahna read to me. Sometimes Britt let her read to him to, but I got to cuddle and rock and listen to her read. I like going to Alabama to see Grumps and Ahna, and Momma promises that they will come in a few weeks to see me her.

Momma told you all about the lamb show yesterday. I loved the lamb show. I keep asking Momma when we can go back and see the lambs, so I can hold them and pet them. But, she says I have to wait till next year, whenever that is. Even better than lambs though, was the cows. Sis. Kelsey told us that they do the same thing at the Breed show. So on Friday we went back to the Strawberry Festival (the lamb show as on Monday). It was raining when we got there, and I had gone to sleep in the carseat so I was a little cranky, but when I got my cup of milk the whole world was right again.

Aunt Manna tells me that I showed a cousins cow, but it couldn't have been one of my cousins, it wasn't Brystal or Lilli or Julia's cow. Her name was Caroline and she was a 2 year old short horn heifer. When the judge came to talk to me, I was very excited. I told him that my name was "Elisha Britt Cunningingham" and I told him what my cow's name was, and he gave me a t-shirt. I was suppose to get a trophy too, whatever that is, but there were too many people or something. I liked walking that cow around. I want to walk the cows in the pasture behind our house now, but Momma says those cows haven't been taught how to walk. I know that's not so, cause I see them walking around all the time. Momma says when I get bigger I can have a cow of my own, but Daddy insists that it will be a steer, cause there's money in steers, but not in the Breed Show.

We really enjoy going to the Strawberry Festival every year. Gary loves the food they have the Wisconsin Cheese that we wait all year to eat. (There was another, new WI Cheese booth there this year, but we went to the good one, the original.) They have Polish dogs, and Italian dogs, they have Philly Cheese Steak, and Gyros. There are funnel cakes which I adore and Elephant Ears that Gary savors. Then of course you can't pass up the 400 ways to eat strawberries while you are there. There are shakes and ice cream, there are chocolate covered and in a shortcake, there are just plain berries and sauces and jams. I'm starting to get hungry all over again just thinking about it.

I really enjoy walking through all the booths. There are the craft contest like crochet and quilting (one day I'm going to enter something). There are clothing contest for all ages. There are paintings and drawings some in ink, some in pencil, and some with pastels. Then in additional to all the contest pieces there are loads of booths with things for sale. There are folks that carve planes out of wood, and people that make furniture, there are hair bows for little girls and blocks and trucks for little boys. There are the leather shops that make belts and hat and my favorite purses. (There's one I've been eyeing for 4 years now, you can see it here.)

And who can forget the music. They have a number of groups that play off and on around the fairgrounds all day, mostly bluegrass groups, but they have a few that play oldies and an Indian group that plays all sorts of stuff on their native instruments. It's really interesting to hear some of the stuff they play, you always do a double take because it's not what you were expecting that song to sound like.

The real draw at the Festival though is the animal shows. They have a number where you bring your entry up and it's judged on appearance, temperament, and conformity to the breed standard, stuff like rabbits and chickens. They also do the plant and horticulture show that way. However, the kids actually show pigs, lambs, goats, and cattle. Among the cattle there is the breed show for those who intend to use or sell their animals for breed and the steer show. It's always interesting to watch. While, for the most part, I have no idea what I'm looking for, Gary and Dad keep a running commentary. It always brings up great stories and memories from the 10 years Gary showed. Occasionally they all get to arguing about which one they think is the best, and since they all showed at least a few, it's fun to listen to them debate.

For a time Mom and Dad were on the committee for showing lambs. Infact, Dad started the lamb jumping contest, which is a real hoot to watch if you ever get the chance. Amanda was partial to the lambs over the other animals, and when Mom stepped down, Amanda took her place over. As a result Amanda, makes sure that her nieces and nephews were aware and at the lamb show this year. They always have a Pee-Wee Showman Class for the 3 year olds and up, before they begin to show their own lambs. It was started as a way to let the younger siblings of those who were showing get interested in the animals. Most kids this age, have no or little natural fear of the animals, and so it's a good time to expose them to the feel of the arena and talking to a judge. Last year Brystal was the only one old enough to show, but this year Brystal, Lilli, Britt, and Julia were all showing.

Brystal went first, and she needed almost no help at all. She was a regular chatter box with the girl who's lamb she showed, and again to the judge. They ask the kids what their name is and what is the name of their lamb. They also usually talk to them for a minute or two about their lamb, and then they get a ribbon. This year they also got a toy lamb, which was a big hit with our bunch. Brystal though, lead her lamb around more or less by herself and she was great! The next three went out with the second bunch. Lilli needed almost no help, though her ram, Rambo, wouldn't always come along. She was very talkative with the judge. Britt went out behind her. He had a lamb named Virginia. She was pretty mild mannered, but the girl who owned the lamb lead her, and Britt just walked around barely hanging on to the end of the rope. Julia was fourth out into the arena. She had a Cinnamon sheep, named you guessed it - Cinnamon, (who had two adorable twin lambs back in the pen) that more or less walked her around the ring. All the kids but Britt would tell the judge who they were and what their lamb's name was. Britt did whatever Lilli did, but wouldn't talk. Even Ruth got a little stuffed lamb. Like I said, it pays to have an Aunt on the Lamb Committee.

I read somewhere probably on Backyard Chickens (one of the best websites ever), that if you want to have consistant meat birds or steady egg layers that you should hatch new eggs every 18 to 24 months. For most people that means you set some eggs in the incubator or hope to have a broody hen either every year or every other year. We are hoping to start selling some eggs at Granddaddy Garland's road side stand, and I'm looking into selling some hatching eggs as well. Additionally we would like to try to have a few good enough quality birds for Britt to be able to show birds in the Strawberry Festival. For these various reason, we sat some Marans eggs in the bator back the end of February. Unforunately the night the egg turner was taken out the temp spiked up over 110, and none of the eggs hatched. I broke them open today to see how many developed. Seven were fully developed, 2 more quit developing fairly early, and 5 were not fertile. We've made some adjustments, and today another 20 eggs went in. I've never washed the eggs, because washing them takes away their first line of defense in keeping bacteria out of the egg and the developing chicks, but come to find out some people do wash them, and infact almost all hateries wash their eggs before incubating. We have 13 washed eggs in and 7 nonwashed eggs. Additionally of the 13 washed eggs, they recommend that you wait no more than 10 to 14 days to begin incubating the eggs. Some of the 13 have been in there a little more than 2 weeks, so that may further drop our hatch rate. At any rate we are hoping for some more chicks in 21 days.

In other news, tonight, we, I mean I became the happy owner of 6 more hens: 1 Barred Rock, 1 Columbian Wyandotte, 2 Speckled Sussex, and 2 Cuckcoo Marans. After the initial squabbling, they seemed to settle down together. I need some more chicken names. Anyone got any suggestions for the letters R, W, S, and M?

We really enjoyed hosting the Florida Fellowship Meeting again this year. Last time we had it Britt was 3 weeks old, and while I did enjoy it, with the sleep deprivation and the lack of normal pitching in for a Church meeting, it just felt weird. This year I did the weeks of deep cleaning here at the house leading up to it. We were part of the painting, mulching, and work at the Church. During the meeting we helped set tables, prepare meals, and shepard kids. It's alot of work to host such a big meeting. Just the logistics of lining up homes for as many preachers and families as we could manage was overwhelming.

Of course when the big weekend arrived everything went surprisingly smooth. I'm not going to lie and say that every sermon was the best I've ever heard, but there were many thought provoking and inspiring messages, and even some that I thought had to make my top ten ever sermons list. you can check out the messages on our Church website. Some of the ones I've gone back and listened to again were Bro. Joe Nettles on Studying and making the world a part of our daily life, Bro. David Montgomery on a Triumphant Christ, and Bro. Mike Montgomery on the mystery of the resurrection and how we will all be changed. The singing was simply heavenly as well. I'll leave you with a little clip, please disregard the absolutely horrendous singing of the one doing the recording, and just watch and listen to the kids. This is a snippet of life on the front pew in a weekend long meeting with 5 kids 5 and under.

The weekend after the Fellowship Meeting was over, Daddy and Britt went to town to get some more chicken feed for our chickens while Momma and I stayed home to do a little housework. (I was very helpful you know, I used my monkey to dust the bottom shelves while she worked on the higher shelves. Daddy came back and said with each bag of feed you bought, you got a free chick. So we all loaded up and went down to the Ace Feed Store, and Momma picked out two Americauna chicks, that will lay green eggs when they get bigger. We named the darker one Alma, and the one that looked more like a chipmunk we named Aurora.

Well, Alma didn't quite make it a week, she got a clogged vent, and Momma found out too late to save her. Chicks don't do well alone so Momma went out and found a Buff Orphington chick which we named Blanche. They are doing well and are getting big. Britt barely wants to touch their backs, and always says to himself, "Gentle. Don't touch their beaks." Me, I'm loving them. Momma warns me from time to time that I'm too rough, but they seem to like me too. Today, Momma moved them out of their brooder box into the little coop and run permanently since they are now a month old. She has carried them out a time or two to let them play outside. I don't like that I can't reach them through the run now, Momma says I'll get over it.

Grandmover and Granddaddy came to see me back in February. They came down just before, and stayed just a little past. We went to alot of Church, but we also played alot on my swing set. Granddaddy would sit and talk with me for hours, and push me. Grandmover swung with me and she pushed me.

Sometimes we ate lunch outside and sat around and I told them about the cows, and Grandmover would tell me stories. Sometimes we took trips in the wagon and when it got too hot we went inside to play. Ruth played with us too in the swing and on the slide. She sat with Grandmover alot. They cuddled together.

We've been on a bit of a vacation around here. Both of the blogging and the physical variety. It's been a busy month since I last checked in, and hope to update about a few of our happenings. First we had the Fellowship Meeting which was unbelievable blessed. If you weren't here, all I have to say is you missed out on one of the best meetings ever. Then of course we had the Florida Strawberry Festival, which in my opinion is one of the absolute best parts about living in Florida (along with no real winter). Yesterday we just got back from a week in Alabama with my family, which we always enjoy. In between all of that we put some eggs in the bator, planted a garden, and did some spring cleaning.

For now though, I just thought I'd post about a little milestone we reached tonight. We retired the highchair until the next youngin comes along, and bought Ruth a booster seat at Walmart. She was very excited about it, and dinner went well, except for a few minor corrections such as "Stop intentionally dropping cheese in the floor" (toward Ruth), "Get back up in your seat" (toward Britt), "Don't pull the tablecloth out from under your plate" (again to Ruth), and "Don't eat your sister's cheese" (I'm sure you can figure that one out). Britt was pleased to have Ruth sitting next to him at the table too. Except he kept asking who was going to sit in Ruth's brown chair. I explained to him that it use to be his high chair, and then it was Ruth's highchair, and that when we had another baby then it would be their highchair. He said, he wanted a baby (something he's been telling us off and on since we saw my friend's 3 week old and another friend's 7 month old last week). The highchair looked a little lonely sitting there, and I was reminded that we know have a preschooler and a toddler in the house, not a toddler and a baby.
