The Joy of My Salvation

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. ~Habakkuk 3:18

Rebecca,

Well I just put you to bed for the night my little sweet thing, I cannot believe that it is time be writing another of these post.  I have packed up the last of your 0-3 month things this week, with the exception of my favorite dress, which I am going to let you wear tomorrow before packing it up.  You have out grown the size 0 shoes too.  You have such long feet.  I don't know what wrong with me but I feel like you are more rapidly growing than the others.  With Britt we were always so eager to see the next new first that I am not sure we full enjoyed babyhood.  With Ruth we were under such strain emotionally and financially that at times it was hard to relax. With you I just want to soak up the wonderful thing that having a baby back in the house is, but you don't seem to intend to lay around being a baby long.

This month you have not only mastered rolling all over the place, but you are beginning to army crawl. I meant to get some video of it for this post, but I kept forgetting.  You aren't very fast, but you push with you legs, grip with your toes and brace yourself with your forearms.  I will be curious to see if you will be content to move around this way, or if you will crawl the more conventional way, or be an early walker.  You spend a lot of time on your belly, you would rather be in the floor than about anywhere else. You are constantly trying to roll over onto your belly in the carseat, swing, or bouncer.  Infact you managed it tonight in the carseat.  I am going to have to remember to not let you sit in it unbuckled. The others didn't do that, to be honest I didn't know it was possible, you must be stronger than I thought.

I have given up on making you sleep on your back.  Your brother and sister were both side sleepers, with a wedge, and I tried that with you since you didn't like being on your back. Now that you can roll so easily, anytime I put you down you automatically roll onto your stomach. I am not sure it is that big of a deal anyway. I turned out ok (your Daddy and uncles might disagree, but I digress).  I moved you to your crib in your and Ruth's room this week. It was past time to do so, since you had figured out how to rock the cradle, but I hated to do it.  Unlike the others you have been a very quiet sleeper not much grunting and moving about, we haven't minded having you in the room. Plus I was enjoying the new baby stage. I won't get emotional again, just go back and reread the last half of the first paragraph.

You still love bath time, but Daddy has upgraded you from the baby tub to washing you in the tub on your back with half an inch of water. You go crazy with the kicking. I still use the tub, if you need to know why once again, go back to the end of the third paragraph.  Haha.  You are also still a great nurser, though you have been grinding/biting a little this past week or two.  I was concerned that I goofed up badly by not introducing a bottle around 6 weeks like I did with the others, because when we tried at 2.5 months, you wouldn't eat. We tried several times and figured it out after a month. You won't take breast milk in a bottle, but don't mind formula at all.  Go figure?

You are showing more interest in toys this month. You favorite three things without a doubt are the pink singing bear, the spinning turtle, and your owl.  The pink bear is strapped to your crib. It was Ruth's but she didn't really ever pay much attention to it. You can't figure out how to work it but you will crush yourself up against it and manage to set it off, then roll off it and grin and watch it. When it isn't singing, you talk to it. The spinning turtle on the carseat is the only toy out of the three that you will even watch. You get crazy excited kicking and laughing when I set it to swinging. You bat at it more and more now. You also laugh at your owl and chew on its ears or suck on the silky ruffle. You are finding your thumb more and more this month, and I wonder if you, like Ruth, will carry around your owl and suck your thumb.

We are kinda falling into a routine. You get up around 9 each morning, and eat close to an hour. You then lay around in the floor, generally propped up on you hoppy and watch your siblings, sometimes I could swear you are watching tv with them (I think I see your eyes moving to follow people on Skype too for that matter). You are generally back to sleep by 11, and sleep until 2. That is usually when I break from whatever I am working on in the house, to make a late lunch for everyone and then feed you. We then rock, eat, and watch an episode of Property Brothers while Ruth takes a nap, and Britt has quiet time. You are usually down for a short nap around 4 till 5 or 5:30.  You then stay awake for the rest of the night. You generally want to eat again whenever we have supper no matter when it is ready - 5 or 7 or 8:30.  You want to be held more in the evenings, or at least talked to. You and Daddy have watched several Rays games together as a result. Most nights you nurse around another hour till you nurse yourself to sleep between 10:30 and 11.

Ruth likes to play with you but she doesn't talk to you. Britt asked "my wittle, Abecky" a question the other day, and she cut him off saying rather emphatically, "Babecca, can't tawk, Bwitt."  Your Daddy loves to just sit and hold you, and I often see him absent mindlessly playing with your crazy hair when ya'll are sitting together. And of course I love you too, especially when we have our cooing conversations puncuated with lots of laughing.  You are a real blessing, and we are so thankful to God for you.

Love,
Momma

Momma promises that as soon as she is done working on the house that she will have time to sit down and help us blog again.  I just want her to hurry up and paint my room purple, but she says that is the last project on the list.  In the meantime, we are just playing with our toys, in the yard with Kita, and I am making Britt read to me.

Yesterday, I finished reading about the life of Solomon.  It is a really interesting study in contrast.  There was something in Solomon that made both his father and God take notice, and he though not the eldest inherited the throne of Isreal.  He was chosen to carry out the work of building the temple.  God offered to give him ANYTHING, and he asked for a good thing, for wisdom to execute judgement for the Lord's people.  This so pleased God, that he gave him everything else too.  He wrote at least 29 of the 31 chapters of Proverbs, more wisdom than I will ever be able to fully comprehend and apply in my life.  When reading about the life of Solomon he started out in his father's footsteps.  One thing that particularly struck me, this reading through, is his regard for everyone, not just the Israelites.  All of the Canaanites that were still in the land, who way back under Joshua agreed to be hewers of wood and drawers of water, aka servants, it is those peoples that Solomon drafts to go into Lebanon and cut the trees for the Lord's House, amongst other jobs (according to II Chronicles 2:17-18).  However, if you notice over in I Kings 5:13-14, he doesn't work all of these men to death, but rather works them one month, and then they spend 2 months at home, and then work another month.  It enabled them to take care of their families, their crops at home, their businesses.    They weren't part of His chosen people, but Solomon treated them well regardless.  His wisdom and works, were so well know that many countries paid tribute even Syria and Egypt.

A couple of Sundays ago, on the way to and from Church, I read the accounts of the building and dedication of the Temple in II Chronicles, and I Kings.  Gary and I then talked about it alot.  The temple was dedicated according to the timeline about 7 months after it's completion, and the presence and shekinah glory of God was so evident, weighty, overpowering that the priest could not stand to minister, and all present worshiped God. (I Kings 8:10-11)  Then the prayer that Solomon utters is prophetic and incredibly moving, that I thought I would include it.

"And Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven:  ... But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?  Yet have thou respect unto the prayer of thy servant, and to his supplication, O Lord my God, to hearken unto the cry and to the prayer, which thy servant prayeth before thee to day:  That thine eyes may be open toward this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there: that thou mayest hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make toward this place.  And hearken thou to the supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest, forgive.
If any man trespass against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to swear, and the oath come before thine altar in this house:  Then hear thou in heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, condemning the wicked, to bring his way upon his head; and justifying the righteous, to give him according to his righteousness.  When thy people Israel be smitten down before the enemy, because they have sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and confess thy name, and pray, and make supplication unto thee in this house:  Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which thou gavest unto their fathers.  When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray toward this place, and confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them:  Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, that thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance.  If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust, or if there be caterpiller; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness there be;  What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house:  Then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)  That they may fear thee all the days that they live in the land which thou gavest unto our fathers.
Moreover concerning a stranger, that is not of thy people Israel, but cometh out of a far country for thy name's sake;  (For they shall hear of thy great name, and of thy strong hand, and of thy stretched out arm;) when he shall come and pray toward this house;  Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for: that all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as do thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called by thy name.
If thy people go out to battle against their enemy, whithersoever thou shalt send them, and shall pray unto the Lord toward the city which thou hast chosen, and toward the house that I have built for thy name:  Then hear thou in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.  If they sin against thee, (for there is no man that sinneth not,) and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;  Yet if they shall bethink themselves in the land whither they were carried captives, and repent, and make supplication unto thee in the land of them that carried them captives, saying, We have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness;  And so return unto thee with all their heart, and with all their soul, in the land of their enemies, which led them away captive, and pray unto thee toward their land, which thou gavest unto their fathers, the city which thou hast chosen, and the house which I have built for thy name:  Then hear thou their prayer and their supplication in heaven thy dwelling place, and maintain their cause, And forgive thy people that have sinned against thee, and all their transgressions wherein they have transgressed against thee, and give them compassion before them who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them:  For they be thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest forth out of Egypt, from the midst of the furnace of iron:  That thine eyes may be open unto the supplication of thy servant, and unto the supplication of thy people Israel, to hearken unto them in all that they call for unto thee.  For thou didst separate them from among all the people of the earth, to be thine inheritance, as thou spakest by the hand of Moses thy servant, when thou broughtest our fathers out of Egypt, O Lord God.
And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto the Lord, he arose from before the altar of the Lord, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven.  And he stood, and blessed all the congregation of Israel with a loud voice, saying, Blessed be the Lord, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised: there hath not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by the hand of Moses his servant.  The Lord our God be with us, as he was with our fathers: let him not leave us, nor forsake us: That he may incline our hearts unto him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his judgments, which he commanded our fathers.  And let these my words, wherewith I have made supplication before the Lord, be nigh unto the Lord our God day and night, that he maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel at all times, as the matter shall require:  That all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God, and that there is none else.  Let your heart therefore be perfect with the Lord our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.  And the king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before the Lord." (I Kings 8:22, 27-62)

After this the Lord comes to him, and tells him that he has heard his prayer and will honor it.  And yet, the man with legendary wisdom, the wisest man to ever live, other than Jesus, did one really, really dumb thing.  He thought it was a good idea to have 700 wives, and 300 concubines.  The numbers are too much for me to even comprehend.  Many of his wives were foreigners who bought their religions with them.  Moses and Joshua had warned the people not to intermarry, for the very reason that we see played out in Solomon's life.  Initial he builds the princess from Egypt her own house, because he says she shouldn't stay in the house in Jerusalem where the ark had been kept, because it was holy, and she worshiped other gods.  But in the end he has so reversed course, that he sacrifices and offers strange incense to all his wives' gods around the countryside.  He even, despite the Lord appearing to him twice, and the great glory at the dedication of the temple, he even builds alters and houses for all these other gods.  Then when God judges him for this, and by a prophet tells Jeroboam that he will give him the throne next, Solmon tries to kill him as if that will change the judgement of God (I Kings 11:29-40).

This slide away from God causes him to amass chariots and horsemen, and build many massive cities to house them, even though, the Israelites were told not to.  The burden on the nation to support the king, and his court, and his household was enormous (I Kings 12:4) and everything that Samuel predicted would happen came to pass (I Samuel 8:11-18).  This would be a sad place to leave Solomon, and it is sad that he wasted so much of his life, but we have Ecclesiastes.  On the way to Church on Sunday, I read the entire book, and Gary and I talked about much of it.  (I have mentioned what a long drive we have now.)  It is kinda like an autobiography, Solomon tells off all the things he has seen and tried, and that nothing outside of God brings lasting peace, purpose, and satisfaction. The final chapter is especially hopeful when he sums up the whole point of life, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." (Ecclesiastes 12:13)  We both came to the conclusion that at the end of his life, Solomon "woke up" and returned to the Lord.  It is comforting to know, no matter how badly we mess up, that we can always return to our Father, and spend whatever days remain walking along side him, and obeying his word.

Britt,

Another year has passed, and alot of things have changed since last Father's Day.  We were all still living in Florida.  In this amount of time, I interviewed, got a job, moved to Indiana, where we lived about 8 months, and now have moved to Pennsylvania and are living in the mountains.  We had a good job in Indiana, but I hope this one will prove to be better, so that I can better provide for you and your sisters.  This is a new house for us, and we have done alot of work so that we can all be comfortable together in our new home.
Not only are we in a new area, but we have added a new addition to our family - Rebecca Joy.  We enjoy watching you and your siblings.  You and Ruth still cause the most trouble.  Some of it is you aggravating Ruth, and other times you are fussing because she is ignoring you.  Rebecca is in her own little world, babbling and laying around by herself.  She especially loves to watch you.  You sing to Rebecca to calm her down when she is crying or fussing, particularly in the car.  It makes her happy, and she gets quiet to hear you sing, but it also makes Momma happy to hear you sing.
You have several accomplishments this year.  You are much better potty trained, having only a few accidents.  You typically can use the bathroom without assistance, though you need help cleaning up.  You have memorized several Bible verses with Momma, and pick them up so quickly.  You have long been interested in reading books, but lately have been asking us what every single sign says while we are driving.  You are recognizing more and more of them.  You are increasingly helpful around the house, Momma has talked about making you a chore chart, you put away your dirty clothes, dishes, and pick up with only minimal reminders now.  I am really pleased with your appetite lately, some days we are shocked by how much you eat, especially since you use to be so very picky.  You have gotten much better about eating with a fork and spoon, though Momma laments that you won't stay sitting down at the table while you eat.
One thing I still love to do with you is wrestle, but you have gotten much harder to beat up.  You cheat by sneaking up to get me when I'm not looking.  I've had to fuss at you several times for jumping all over me, when it's not appropriate.  You really enjoy camping and watching the fire.  We have camped out some, and hope to do more this summer.  You don't mind gathering sticks, and want to put them in the fire, even when I don't want you to.  Lately, we have enjoyed searching for golf balls on the golf course.  Though I often find them and then direct you and Ruth so that you can "find" it.  It's like Easter eggs all over again.  Yesterday, was the first time that I took you on the golf course with me.  We only did 9 holes, but after we ate our hot dog for lunch, you were a bit wore out.  I let you help me drive the golf cart, you were terrible.  You would either barely push the pedal and putt-putt but not move, or you would slam it down all the way and the cart would bounce five feet in the air.  Your idea of steering is to go back and forth with the steering wheel, and didn't drive straight at all, way too much to the left and then way too much to the right.  Needless to say even with me pushing on the brake alot, that poor golf cart got a real workout.  You wanted me to drive and you walk some, so you walked a fair amount of the course as well.

You are so much more mature this year.  You seem to be understanding more of what we are trying to teach you.  Momma has been able to tell a huge difference since just Easter.  There are less fits pitched, less spankings needed, and more fun all the way around.  We still need to work on your obedience, sometimes it's important to do what Momma and Daddy tell you, without asking why and still not doing what is necessary.  We like that you are inquisitive, but sometimes it needs to be tempered.  I hope this next year that we can work on that and on volume control.  Lately you only have one volume incredibly loud.  When we are in town, or a restaurant, or it is late at night you need to be quieter.  We are still working on please and thank you, yes ma'am and no ma'am (that has taken a huge hit since coming up North, so many tell you not to say it to them), opening and holding doors for your Momma.  All of this boils down to being polite and considerate of others.  I guess this year's lesson that I hope to teach is the importance of being polite and considerate.  You obviously don't have control over most things in life, but as I've told you before you can control your attitude.  You need to treat others as you would wish to be treated, giving others respect and honor on a daily basis.  You need to start with this lesson at home, being respectful to me and your mother like your Bible verse says.  Also, taking care of and not fighting with your sisters.  For me, I find it appealing to see others go the extra mile of being polite and going out of your way to treat others better than you treat yourself, and I hope you will emulate that.
I love you, and I'm excited to see what this next year holds, as you grow older and more mature, closer to school age, and taking the next step.  You have already shown so much excitement in learning from books, videos, and Momma.

Love,
Daddy
