The Joy of My Salvation

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. ~Habakkuk 3:18

I had hoped to do better, but shamefully have not posted like I would have liked to in the last three weeks. With the wedding on Saturday though I just don't have the time. However, as soon as I return from our honeymoon, I promise blogs on Scotland, Singing School, the Wedding and Honeymoon, though not neccessarily in good chronological order.

Thanks for your continued patience people, as well as continued prayer for me and Gary.

Well, if you haven't heard, I am home. Scotland was amazing, and London wasn't bad either. I can still hardly believe that I went. Monday, June 4, 2007, several of us met up at school to travel down to B'ham to stay for the night before catching our very early plane out.

However, before we could enjoy the beauty of Scotland, we had a layover, an eleven hour lay over in New Jersey at Newark Airport. Since one of our teachers complained they threw in a free tour of New York. Granted we got quantity not quality, but it was alot better than sitting around the airport all day.

So here are some pictures for the day.

New York City Skyline (above) (below) However not everything was pretty, we did see the homeless.

Apparently there is a $350 fine for honking in New York. It must work since we did see officers writing tickets and honking was at a minimum. (above) (below) Every fire station in every burrough of New York responded after 9-11. Each Station lost at least one person, however Engine 54, Battery 9, Truck 4 lost every member, and this is the memorial in their honor.

This is the Rockafellow Center, and man it looks so much bigger in person than when you watch the Rockets dance at the Macey's Parade. (above) (below) Thought some of you might appreciate seeing Fashion Street, it goes down for miles on 7th Avenue.

This is the Empire State Building. Since the Towers fell, it is the tallest building in the city. (above) This is the Anvil Building, and it is very, very narrow. (below)

This is Chinatown. A random and interesting point 80% of the residences speak only Chinese and no English. (above) (below) The Manhattan Bridge in the background and in the front the Brooklyn Bridge.

This is a picture of me and Courtney hanging out at Pier 51. We are eating hot dogs and drinking tea. Now there is a story here about this. We were thinking that we outta get a hot dog while in New York, but alas it was terrible. Also the thought struck us that we would only be able to drink hot tea while we were gone, so that we outta try to get a last cup. So I walked up to the guy and asked if when the sign said "Iced Tea" if that meant sweet tea or Yankee tea. He said it was sweeted so we got some. It was the absolute WORST TEA I have ever had in my life. It was bitter, and sorta raspberry like. Even the Yankees on the trip agreed that it was the worst tea they had ever had. So we went around giving everyone a sip who had not already seen the horrible expression on someone else's face. (above) (below) This is as close as we got to Lady Liberty.

This is the American flag on the crane at Ground Zero. It is the only memorial to September 11, at the spot. If you didn't know that this was the place, then you would think it was just a big construction cite. (above) (below) A view of Ground Zero from the current Trade Center across the street.

So many things to tell you all. I am terribly sorry for the long break in post, but it may continue for a bit longer. I did make it through finals with 2 As and a B. I am busy working away on my stuff for my summer class to Scotland.

As for wedding plans, I have all but a few of the invitations out, and most of my thank you cards. I'm a bit frustrated with my dress people. The bridesmaid dresses arrived a few weeks ago, and they were lower in the back than they told us they would be. My cousin's Maid of Honor dress is coming along, and Gary's three sisters' dresses have been carried down to Florida so they are working on getting them altered down there. I just have one more bridesmaid to take care of up here and then that will be done. My dress however is not going so well. I have an appointment on Friday at 1:45, to check what she has let out in the bust, and to pin up the hem line. HOPEFULLY it will be done in two weeks when I get back from Scotland, so I can carry it down to Florida with me. Nothing like being last minute, huh? I finally have my headpiece to go with my veil so that is a relief, found a very nice, simple one that looks like me for $27.

Weekend before last Gary and I drove a moving truck down with pretty much everything I own. Mother was giving me EVERYTHING she could get out of the house. She even sent my cradle with me. haha. Gary didn't want to put it in, but I made him, after all Granddaddy made it, and mother was threatening to carry it to the dump. We pretty much have the apartment set up, though I still have a few boxes left to unpack.

I got home late last night, and have a few things to do around here before our annual meeting at Crossroads starts Friday night. I'm very excited about it Elder Ernie Stump, and Elder Kenneth Watts are our guest ministers. Then Elder David Guttery and Elder Herman Clark and Chris Hollinsworth have promised to come as well. I'm very excited.

Then of course on Monday night we are driving down to B'ham. We have to be at the airport on Tuesday morning at 4 am, to fly out. I am getting so excited about this trip! We are flying from B'ham to Atlanta, then from there on to New York, where we have an 11 hour lay-over. Since it is so long, they are giving us a free tour of New York in that time, I am so excited. We will probably see Ground Zero, Lady Liberty, Broadway, the Empire State building. Then it is an overnight flight to Glascow. We will be there about 9 am their time, so we will start touring almost immediately. Mother gave me a beautiful journal for my birthday to carry with me, and I have about 40 batteries for my camera. :)

When I get back, I have a week to get all of my assignments in, then I will be off to Singing School, then I will leave there for Florida, and spend a week there until the wedding, then Gary has off almost two weeks for our honeymoon. Then fourth weekend we will have our annual meeting at Little Union. After that it's only two or three weeks until school starts back, if I can land a teaching position in the area. Busy, busy but that's life right?

I promise more pictures next post, back States side. :)

Last night I tried cooking for real, for the first time in years. Growing up I was a crappy cook. There are loads of horror stories about terrible meals that the boys had to eat, because Mother was trying to teach me to cook. She is a perfectionist and very impatient and I'm easily frustrated as Daddy use to describe the scene. However I thought I would chronical the attempt last night, so for your amusement...

See I'm cooking here, there is a cookbook (Rachel Ray's 365: No Repeats, a Year of Deliciously Different Dinners). I also have three bowls of stuff and I'm rolling chicken in flour, egg, and bread crumbs.
Here they are cooking. Here's the first diasterous batch. Burnt all up.But I tried again. And now they look much, much better. I even made homemade, honey mustard sauce!Kat and Matthew looking a little nervous and anxious about dinner.
Ultimately they decided it was great. We were all happy and much relieved!

As some of you may know by now, I got sick weekend before last and ened up staying in Florida for a week longer than I anticipated. In addition to a very little studying, I spent a great deal of time working on our apartment. We even painted two days. In any event, welcome to our home...

These two shots are of our living room. We painted it a chocolate color. The first is obviously the couch and the second is more or less the rest of the room. The next two are of our little kitchen.

And the next to last one is our dining room, we painted it a sagy-olivish green. Then the final one is of me unpacking stuff. There are some more on myspace if you want to go and look at them. http://www.myspace.com/daniduck44

In honor of this being finals week and in the next two days, I have two books to read, two papers to write, and two finals to study for and take. Here is a thought on my life these days. Iffen it looks familiar it's the same post from myspace that I made a few weeks back, but this time with accompanying pictures...

1. First find a comfortable chair, that will inspire you to work.
2. Debate straight typing vs writing out the paper by hand first.
3. Decide to go with typing after all it's due tomorrow (or maybe last week) and you don't have time to do it twice
4. Check your email.
5. Check your myspace and post a bulletin complaining about the paper you have to write.
6. Check your facebook and update your status to reflect the fact that you are suppose to be doing your homework.
7. Waste countless time trying to find the directions for the assignment and read it carefully, to make sure you get it.
8. Check either your email, myspace, or facebook one more time just for the heck of it.
9. Get hungry and walk into the kitchen to cook some Ramon because that's all you can afford.
10. Call a friend from the class, while telling yourself you just need to check this one thing for this paper. If they haven't started the paper either, take a trip to Waffle House to discuss the class and why you hate this paper.
11. When you get back to the apartment, sit down in the floor and organize the pretty notecards. 12. Complain about the heat and turn on your fan.
13. Spend alot of time reorganizing the notecards.
14. Fix a PB and Bannana sandwhich and debate with your brother what movie you both would rather be watching.
15. Sit back down in your comfortable chair, that will inspire you to work.
16. Read over the assignment again to make sure you really understand it.
17. Check your email, myspace, and facebook all over again.
18. Look at your facebook status and think, there is no way it's been 3 hours since I updated that.
19. Open your notes and books.
20. Think about the fact that you really should have emailed your parents, grandparents, and a friend from singing school last week. So go and do that.
21. Get up and streach.
22. Write the header to your paper.
23. Think about how boring the title sounds.
24. Pick out some music to inspire you to work.
25. Sing several songs.
26. Call the friend from earlier to see if he's finished his yet. Talk about anything else for another thirty minutes.
27. Sit down in your comfortable chair, decide it's not actually that comfortable and take your brother's that looks exactly the same
28. Read over the assignment, because the third time is the charm.
29. Realize that you have not yet checked for comments on your blogspot, so go check it.
30. Go and see if anyone else has posted.
31. Get desperate and check and see if anyone you know, knows anyone who has posted.
32. Next do one of two things, read everyone's really old post or just write a new one yourself.
33. Find new inspirational music since the last cd has played at least three times at this point.
34. Do some serious thinking about your plans for an academic future.
35. Debate with your brother about your plans for an academic future.
35. Check everything that you can possibly think of online.
36. Give up and swap back to your orginial comfortable chair.
37. Don't bother to read the assignment again, just type.
38. Check your myspace one last time, really I promise.
39. Doze off.
35. Wake up with a keyboard print in your check, and lots of jibberish on your screen.
36. Type the paper at lightening speed and don't forget to print it.
37. Get ready for class: fight the brother for the shower, then argue over counterspace.
38. Leave for class but only get out of the parking lot before realizing that you didn't brush your teeth or pick up your paper off the printer tray, so go back.
39. Spend the first ten to fifeteen minutes of class looking for parking.
40. Turn paper in, alternate complaining on the complete lack of time to write a good paper with bragging on the ability to procrastinate, yet finish it on time.
On a serious note, I promise a REAL blog soon, in fact as soon as finals are over.

So as many of you may know, last weekend was the big weekend. It was the weekend to end all weekends. Not only was there to be an awesome church meeting, but there was marital counseling with Brother Ronald Lawrence and there was the meeting of the Big Four. No not Woodrow Wilson, David Lloyd George, Vitorio Orlando, and Georges Clemenceau. No even bigger...

Gary's parents and my parents, gulp!

All in all things went very well, there were a few tense moments, but no major catastrophes. Everyone was on their best behavior ever. It was a huge relief. We even took some pretty pictures after church on Sunday. They are both in front of the church sign. The first one is of Gary's parents, Gary and Shelia, then me and Gary. The second one if of both of our families. Dad (Gary Sr), Mom (Shelia), Gary Britt, me, Mother (Gwen), Daddy (Rick), and all three brothers, Matthew, Nicholas, and Benjamin.

Tonight, I watched the coverage on the shootings at Virginia Tech. I'm not going to write alot other than to say, that I am praying for them and this makes me very sad. I want to tell you all that I love you very much, and I appreciate you all, from those I've known longer than I can remember to those of you who I've only meet through the internet and phone conversations. Thank you for every loving and encouraging comment, and thank you for being the friends you all are.

I'm in a good mood. I only have one more day of work left and then nothing but school and wedding stuff to deal with. By the way wedding is July 7, 2007. Mark your calendars and email me your addresses. I've been trying to cleverly collect addresses, but I'm running out of time, so just be really sweet and email it to me at daniduck44@hotmail.com. His family and his church want to keep as many people as possible so think on that if you think you might can come. It's the weekend after the singing school in Jasper so after that you can all pack up and come to Florida for the week.

Other marvelous notes. There is a big church meeting this weekend, who else is excited!!! I will be there and might break Brittney from Gum Pond with me, and Gary Britt is flying in just to see you guys! I'm so excited. Nothing like a billion young people living it up at church, and the singing... sigh I can't wait. Will someone let me spend the night, maybe the coolest sister ever (hint, hint, Blevin's girls :) )?

Last bit of great news. I am overweight. Yes, I know you don't think so but the doctor says so. Only 20 pounds, half of that I put on in three months after the Tyler event, the other half in about six months on steriods and athma medicine. Tonight I started running with Matthew and some of his friends. It's been a long while and I can't run 3 miles like I could back in the cross country days, but I feel better, and I'm hoping this will help me look a bit flatter in that wedding dress.

haha. Good day all in all, don't you think?

Well, since I have finished my presentation and taking a break from my paper, I will give you my first spring break story. On Tuesday of spring break, I got to go to work with my Gary Britt. It was inventory day. So while I was mostly still asleep, he made me climb up on top of the shelves and count things for him to write down. It was fun, I was climbing around I don't know probably thirty feet up in the air. When to my great surprise I discovered that you can by Wisdom by the gallon, Merit by the ounce, and Zeal by the ounce. I was very amused needless to say.

Later that day, we got to make a few deliveries before lunch, and I got to go riding with him again a couple of times later that week. I got to ride out to Wymoma the next day, and it was a nice long drive. Then on Friday, I got to hang out with him some in the office and go on a delivery.

It was great fun, and now I actually know what it is that he is doing all day.

Well in 56 hours and 55 minutes I will be leaving and now in exactly 66 hours and 54 minutes I plan to be in the arms of my beloved. If you count both travel days I will have 10 whole days with him.

And as if that wasn't reason enough to celebrate check out the weather.

The first several pics here are from around campus. The next on is of an up turned field on my way home. for some strange reason, whenever I see the plowed fields, I am over come with the desire to go running through them barefoot.
And finally, check out who else was thrilled about our stellar weather. Yep you guessed everyone's favorite two mascots, Una and her brother Leo the III.

I love flowers. They remind me of things. My personal favorites are daisies. When I see Buttercups and Tiger Lilies I think of my mother because they grow all over our yard. Merigolds remind me of Daddy, because he always wanted Merigolds around our mailbox, and if they will grow in Florida I plan to plant some when Gary and I find us a little place.

I like sleeping with the window cracked, my bed here at the apartment is right under a window, and I enjoy the breeze. I wake up earlier and more alert, and sleep better. Weird huh? Anyway, it was a bit hot in the apartment last night so Matthew and I turned on the fan and cracked the windows. It's great. I walked to class today (campus is about seven blocks or so down from us). The bradford pear trees, tulip trees, and even a few dogwoods are blooming. There are buttercups galore as well. So I brought some, home.

I like to leave flowers for Matthew on his desk. I do my schoolwork back here in the bedroom with all the books on my bed and stuff, on the West side of the apartment. He does all of his studying in the living room, the East side of the apartment. So they brighten his room up a bit I think. Plus I managed to knock down the broken set of blinds down in the bedroom over his bed pulling them up, so I need some points. haha.

Also thought ya'll might like this. It's a picture I took a bit more than a month ago, of the sunset on the river. That's the moon in the top, though it's hard to tell.

Well doesn't look like I'll be wearing this anytime soon, or watching them in the National Championship game. Ohio State said no today. That's three nos for anyone out there keeping count: UNC, Rice, and Ohio State. I've been pretty blue and doubting about the entire situation. For more pointless information, and my mental crisis go to myspace. I'll post more there as I attempt to make sense of my mushified brain.

"40 Days" by Third Day

Here I am at what feels like the end
And so I come to You, my Lord, again
With this burden buried deep within
This heart that You have made
In this trial that I'm going through
I don't question 'cause I know it's true
That the sorrow brings me back to You
And You have made me stronger

It's been forty days and forty nights
Down the road of many trials
And I pray it's only for a season
'Cause in the wilderness and in the flood
You're the one I'm thinking of
And I know You've brought me for a reason

I have one more thing I've got to say
Before they try to take my life away
Let it be known that I am not afraid
Let Your will be done, Lord

It's been forty days and forty nights
Down the road of many trials
And I pray it's only for a season
'Cause in the wilderness and in the flood
You're the one I'm thinking of
And I know You've brought me for a reason

I have had a trying sort of time lately. Today I got a response back from my Dream School, Rice. They don't want me either. So instead of talking to Gary on the way home tonight (I needed the time to myself to think). I drove about 60 the whole way with Third Day's Album "Come Together" and talked to God, in my very unpolished and odd sort of way.

Some of you may know that I like Third Day a great deal. Tonight, every question I put to the Lord, every doubt and fear I voiced, seemed to find a answering lyric in the next song. Right now I'm on a "road of many trials and I pray it's only for a season." I know that ultimatly things will work out, and what seems so bad now, will pass.

Chorus and second verse to "Get On"

Get on, get on, get on away from me
If you're trying to bring me down
If you're trying to bring me down
Get on, get on, get on away from me
If you're trying to bring me down
If you're trying to bring me down
So if you want to break me you better stay away
I won't listen, noI won't listen to you today
Excuse me if I still question
Carefully all of your intentions
I've decided that I won't listen
Because your words only bring division

I have decided to no longer listen to my doubts and fears about everything, and instead stay up beat despite what comes.

Chorus and second verse of "I Got You"
'Cause I've got everything I need
I got everything
I got You and You're putting it all together
And it doesn't get any better as far as I can tell
I got You right now and ever after
And it doesn't even really matter
That I've got nothing else
'Cause I got You

Where do I go when I want to know the truth?
It isn't me, well it's only You
When will I know what You have for me to do?
Is it now or is it coming soon?
Be it pleasure or be it pain
I'm ready for whatever life may bring
'Cause I know that in the end
Everything works together
For the good of those who love Him

I guess this just says it all. No matter what happens with Grad school, the family/wedding situation, classes, work, any of it. I am not going to lose sight of the bigger picture because even if things are rotten they could always be worse, I am thankful for daily blessings because even in tribulation "it doesn't get any better as far as I can tell" and that "whatever life may bring" I have Him and "it doesn't even really matter that I've got nothing else."

Some concern has been expressed in the past by various people that I am not truly country nor am I truly Southern. I for some random reason, perhaps it is the lack of anything else better to talk about or the fact that I have an unbelievable amount of homework to do, but I am choosing to answer that allegation right this moment!

It may be true that I have never technically lived out side of city limits, that I have never gone camping in the outdoors tent style, that I until two Sundays ago I had never shot a gun, I don't feel a need to have one in the house, or go hunting. Yet it is also true, that I believe that a truck is the only real vehicle, and the bigger the better, that shopping is no fun at all, that cornbread is one of the best things that some woman ever invented, and that a farm is the epitome of the good life.

I think that to say I'm not Southern is insane, "specially iffen you've ever heard me tawwk." In truth I "grew up" out in the county, in Lawrence county to be exact, and it doesn't really matter where it was that I happened to sleep every night.

In case you still have any doubts however, this should lay them all to rest. Tonight we have Tornado weather in downtown Caddo. And like all good, redneck, country, Southerners I'm hoping to see an awesome show. Mother is parniod (or maybe just intellegent) and since I'm not at home in Florence, I can't sit out and watch the storms or chase them. However I did run around in the Hobby Lobby parking lot in some seriously fun straight line winds earlier.

This weather that comes each and every year, to be followed by tornado sirens, brings some great moments to mind. 1995, I was in fifth grade, and was fighting to get a better view through our classroom window as a tornado cut across the playground and field behind the school. It might have been 100 yards away, probably closer. 2000, I was spending the night with a friend when we heard the sirens, so like everyone else, we headed out side to once again watch the tornado that was across the road, probably 200 yards or so away this time. 2004, this time it was late fall. Ty, Mel, Russ, and I were hanging out the balcony on the 13th story of Courtview Towers watching funnels all over town. We saw one really cool one touch down on the River (that would be the Tennessee), and picked out four more, before noticing the one about 20 feet over Courtview. We almost couldn't get the sliding door closed. I don't think I've ever seen glass bend and bow like that, before we all dove for the closet. Finally 2006, I was at Famous Dave's working and for the second weekend in a row Tornadoes were cutting into my tips by keeping people at home. Since there was no one around and a tornado down on the ground north of the River out around Killen (about 15 miles north of us) we all stood around in the sleet watching the incredibly cool looking wall clouds, before they finally closed the store and let us go home.

What about you people, any good storm stories, or am I the only fool among us?

If you want/need mine, let me know and I'll send it back to you. Thanks wonderful people.

So I was driving back to Decatur last Thursday as usual, and admiring the senery. I am continuely amazed by the handiwork of God. I like to draw, and while I'm not a fantastic artist I like to fancy that I have a very small talent in the direction of black and white landscapes; however, I will never compare with the Lord as an artist. Each day we have a different sunset painted changing each moment for us. It's so amazing to me. I often wonder aloud, how anyone could doubt His existance when faced with this beauty.
A Dear Guy Friend South of Here, pointed out this weekend that "Home is when the terrain around you matches the terrain in your heart." I'm not going to say that I have positively seen that but I tell you. The most beautiful three places I have ever seen. The first has got to be the Farm, sunset hill was beautiful this past Sunday, only having my fellow there with me would have made it better. It's the most peaceful place in the whole world. The second is easily West Texas at night at Bethel church. The stars, so many of them everywhere, and the sweet sound of hymn singing carrying into the night, is a memory I will never forget. Finally, this drive between Decatur and Florence, most especially when the cotton fields are in full bloom. I find my home, to be one of the most amazing places on earth. So here are a few pictures headed to Decatur, and then back home on Monday. The pictures don't convey the beauty, the starkness of the trees, the rolling empty fields, the colors of the sky, but I felt compelled to try. Besides, it's always nice to take a moment from my studies, and my crazy job to thank God for little gifts like this beauty.
