The Joy of My Salvation

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. ~Habakkuk 3:18

When we caught Momma Kitty, I was intending to catch Brodie. She was obviously pregnant and we obviously had a problem. Over the last several months, feeling sorry for a number of stray and feral cats behind our apartment, I occasionally leave them food. A lady several doors down has been doing the same for the last five years. Interested in trying to help these cats, I started doing some reading.

A feral cat is just a cat that has gone wild. Feral is just the latin word for wild. There are a few different catagories of them. There are truely feral cats that you rarely see in the day time, they only come out at night to eat, and like most other wild animals they are terrified of humans, often just seeing a person is enough to make them run. Then there are what they consider to be hard strays. These are cats that either were once owned by someone or sometimes the offspring of a cat that was once owned. Since they have been treated poorly and often thrown out by someone who was moving or didn't want them anymore they are leary of humans; however, they will come out some during the day and will tolerate humans being around. There are soft strays, who are either pets that have gotten lost or young cats that are born to feral or hard stray moms. The problem is that they reproduce at astronomical rates because cats go into heat at least three times a year, and when they are nursing litters, or when several males are around. Every year shelters put thousands of cats to sleep because there are not enough homes.

In the past, it was customary to round up these cats and put them to death. Over the last 10 to 20 years a group tried a different approach and found out that if you trap them, spay or neuter them, and then return them, it will stablize the population. The number of cats killed by shelters in the areas where this is being done has decreased by 70%.

The momma cat that we have right now, is nine years old and pregnant for the third time since we've gotten married. The problem right now is that if we carry her in to get her spayed, then they will abort the kittens. Gary isn't wild about cats, but he hates to kill them like that. From the reading I have done she can't be more than 3 weeks away from delievery (at absolute most), so we have decided to keep her till then. After the kittens are old enough we'll spay her and turn her loose if she no more tame than she is now. I've got her set up in a taming cage. The Abernathy girls graciously agreed to let me borrow their large cage. She has a litter box, food and water, and a carrier to hide in. Here are a few pictures of her, we've decided to call her Bobby, as she looks like she's wearing the little ruffled bobby socks I wore to Church when I was five.

Earlier this week reading over at the Beehive has left me inspired to make a New Year's Resolution or two, after some thought here they are...

1) I am going to get some form of regular exercise at least 3 days a week. I was going to say every day, but who am I kidding here. I use to run cross country, that was pre-Asthma. The doctor has worked on my asthma medicine some, and I am actually good to start excerising and stuff tomorrow (had to let meds kick in and get over bronchitis first). My goal is to get out and do some serious walking (and work back up to running) at least on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Hopefully Tuesday and Thursday too.

2) Blog at least twice a week. I know very few read this, and even fewer are actually interested, but it's good to talk to someone other than the cat during the day. It also keeps my brain cells active, and if you haven't notice, my grammer and spelling could use the extra work out.

3) Secretly wean Gary off of sugar. I'm not sure how doable this is, but at the way the boy is eating (and drinking sweet tea) he'll be dead of a heart attack or some such by 50. I want to make him miserable for a whole lifetime, haha. :)

Today, Gary and I celebrated our 6 month anniversary. To celebrate, this was the gift he got me. I think it was just an excuse to get himself a wii game. What do you think?

I am terrible upset. Brodie has been lost for more than 24 hours now.

When the weather is nice he likes to lay in the sun on our balcony, and sometimes he'll even go down the stairs and lay on the concrete sidewalk in the sun. It's been cold for Florida so he hasn't been out in almost a week. Yesterday he was just begging to be let out, so after Gary left to go to town I let him out. I watched him go down the stairs and get comfy on the sidewalk. I always watch him a few minutes to make sure that everything is ok and that he doesn't get on the neighbor's bird feeders. He is never gone more than 15 to 30 minutes. When Gary got back he had been out just about 35 or 45 minutes and I was about to look for him, but I had to put away the things he picked up for me first. When we went out he was gone. I haven't seen him since 1:00 yesterday afternoon.

We have looked everywhere, I've asked all of our neighbors that I can get in touch with. I'm just terrified that something has happened to him. Brodie is very lovable but not always so smart. His internal GPS unit doesn't work quite right. One time he went down stairs and chased the neighbor's yorkie around a little while (they seem to like to play with each other), then went up a different neighbor's balcony and cried to be let in. I walked out and got his attention, but he couldn't seem to figure out that he was on the wrong balcony. I had to go and get him and bring him home.

I sure hope he comes home soon, and that he is ok. It was really hard to sleep last night. I kept getting up and going to the door to look for him and listen for his bell and tags. It was so quite without him sneaking around at night. Below are a couple of pictures of him playing with his Christmas present.

New Year's Eve and Day were alot of fun this year despite being sick. My favorite red-headed sibling flew down on Sunday and stayed until yesterday. He took that picture of us right before we left to go back to the airport yesterday.

For New Year's Eve at Little Union we had church. Brother Buddy preached on two moral issues that sadly won't be an issue in this year's election: abortion and homosexuality. He used many verses to tell us why it was wrong, and how to deal with it. It was an excellent sermon, and he used many scriptures that I wouldn't have thought to go to. Then we had "finger foods." In reality it was the biggest feast ever, with all sorts of fancy fixings. Finally Gary lead singing for about an hour and a half, until just past midnight.

If we had a good time visisting on Monday, we really had a ball on Tuesday. Below are the only two pictures I managed to take. Dad gave Abel a little midgit water gun that would shoot a few feet, maybe two yards, then he brought his high powered supersoaker, with pump action that shoots 50 yards. It was completely unfair. So what did I do. I enlisted the support of pretty much all of the young and not all together wise. The older kids, mostly us girls, filled buckets full of water and hid them by the shed. Then all of the little ones, who had water guns, went and attacked Dad. When he took off after them, they lead him straight to us where we dosed him, multiple times. This went on for sometime. Ultimately pretty much everyone involved was sopping wet. We eventually had to quit so Dad could grill hamburgers for lunch.

After lunch several off us sat around and played cards for a good chunk of the after noon. We played Egyptian War, another slap game, and Bull. Needless to say we had entirely too much fun. Also, as I am not a very convincing bluffer, I pretty much ended up with all the cards. A great time was had by all.

As promised here are a few pictures of gifts that I gave out this year. That I made...
First up, for all the little ones at church, under about chest high to me, I made a little something. The blankets at the top are for Ms. Abbey Rose and Ms. Katie Sue for their baby dolls. Then Brady and Abel each got a tobaggan with their initial on it. Finally Lydia and Cloe each got one with a flower on it. Next, for my parents I made a scrapbook, for the many pictures I managed to steal from their photo albums over the years. The next two pictures are a few pages.
We also made one for Gary's mom, but I forgot to take pictures of it. The two pictures just above are from the one I made for Gary. He kept all of the pamplets and tickets from everything we did on our honeymoon, because he thought we might like to have them someday. So I spent about 10 hours or so, recreated everyday from our rehersel dinner to the day we got home, full of pictures, pamplets, and notes to him. He loved it. Below is the blanket that I made for Aunt Joanna. Every year I pick someone to crochet a blanket for, and I spend alot of time, trying to pick out the right colors and patter for that person. Aunt Joanna has been a huge comfort and help this year since I am so far from home. She has also been the most amazing Godly example. Gary said the daisy pattern would be great, because other than his mother, she was the first person he ever gave a flower to.

We recieved a few homemade gifts as well. Above are the quillas (probably spelled quillows) that Granna made for us. Mine has the flowers and his is blue. They are folded up like pillows, but you can unfold them into a quilt, with a little pocket in the bottom to keep you feet warm. Very nifty. The other two spectaclar gifts from this year are 1) Gary went out and bought me the mixer that I was really, really wanting. I didn't think we had the money for it, but apparently someone, wasn't depositing all of his paycheck, and 2) my parents sent us money for a wii. I couldn't believe it. Gary and I have been playing it like mad, and getting a serious workout too I might add.

I have asthma. I don't know if I've ever mentioned it before. It kinda sprang up out of nowhere a few years ago. It was February-ish 2006. I was sick, and wasn't willing to skip class to go to the infermery. Yes, yes, I know I'm a nerd. Then in a week I was so sick I couldn't go to class. After a few days of that, a friend or two literally carried me to the car (complaining the whole way that I would be fine in another day or two) and down to the infermery. To make a long story short (I know, too late) I had acute bronchitis. In another week, I had asthmatic bronchitis. Ever since then I have had asthma.

Asthma is not fun. Before asthma I did all sorts of things. I played softball and I ran Cross Country. I wasn't ever great or anything, but it was fun and it was exercise. Since the asthma, I can't run a quarter of a mile without seriously dragging on my emergency inhaler. I have had several major attacks that mean I get to go and visit the hospital (which I might also note is absolutely no fun). Anyway, my doctor in Alabama had decided it was time to see a specialist back in March, since we couldn't get it under control, and all we knew is that I am allergic to cigerette smoke. However, since I was getting married and moving to Florida I saw no point in starting with someone up there and then moving. So I figured a few more months wouldn't hurt.

I finaly got in to see Dr. Price last Friday. Come to find out (170 needles later) that I am not allergic to a single thing... well, except maybe a little to ragweed. Instead I have asthma and non-allergenic rhinitis. Basically it means something to the effect that my bronchial tubes are particually sensitive to things in 7 areas: smoke, gasoline, arosal sprays, perfume, cold weather, sudden changes in temperture and humidity, and something else I can't really remember. So he changed all my medicine around and I reckon we'll see if that helps any.

One the other hand, since I had to go off my meds for a week before he could test me, I have gotten bronchitis. Never fun, it has been particually annoying since the one cold day of the Florida year was yesterday. Laugh if you like, it was actually below freezing here. Also since I was involved in a massive water gun fight (I'll get to this in the next blog perhaps) I have the beginnings of ear infections. Joy. I feel like a little kid again. haha.

Anyway, several have been asking about me, and that's the update.

So I hope everyone out there in blogger land had a very Merry Christmas! I sure that you are all still enjoying lots of food, lots of gifts, and undoubtable family and friends, as very few of you have posted in the last week.

We have had a busy and mostly fun time as well. I have been very sad this month about not being able to go home for Christmas, and it was hard to be so very far from my family. Things worked out pretty well here though. Last Friday, Gary has his work Christmas party. They took us to a nice resturant and then bought tickets for everyone to go and see the Rockettes. They were very cool. The last scene was really moving. They did a nativity and over the background read scripture. Here is a picture of us from there.

Last Saturday, we had Christmas with Gary's father's mother (a Cunningham Christmas). They fed us this huge breakfast, and then expected us to eat a huge lunch. The most eventful part of the day was remote control helocopters. Gary's dad and uncle have one so they decided to get one for his grandfather. Well, they managed to break two and so far the third one is still alive. Grandmaw Bea was none too excited at how much of the popcorn Papa J, knocked off the ceiling.

Then on Christmas Eve, they had Christmas with Gary's mother's family (The Varnum Doings). There were like a gazillion people there (I don't think Gary even knew them all) and the Abernathys were invited. After lunch and presents, we sung out of the church hymnals for several hours, till no one had the voice to sing anymore.

Christmas day was very heckic. Mother and Daddy since we were very small decided to stay home. That we could go and visit everyone on other days, but Christmas day was Mother's day. We always have our stocking and book bags (we always get the same Christmas bag every year full of new books). Then we eat breakfast, and then open presents. Sometimes in the afternoon Grandmother and Granddaddy come by for snacks and a late lunch. All in all it's very relaxed and we spend alot of time together.

Down here it was the complete opposite. When we got home on Christmas Eve, Gary and I had to finish his mother's scrapbook for Christmas. Since we were still up at Midnight, my childish husband, begged to open presents. We finally made it to bed, only to have to be at Mom and Dad's at 9:00. They stuffed us full of food, and then we openned presents. Gary and his brother both got helicopters, and Gary went outside and promptly got his stuck 40 to 50 feet up in an oak tree. In order to get it out they pulled out the 25 foot ladder and up Gary went, then he went about that far up into the tree. The boy is too old for such silliness, I should have taken a picture.

Then at 2:00 we had to be at Granna's (Gary's mother's mother) Christmas. We played Dirty Santa (thought they call it white elephant down here) and ate a big lunch. By the time we left at 6:30 Gary and I could hardly stay awake to drive home.

Like Strem I made most of my presents this year. However, as my parents won't get their's until my brother gets home from visisting me over New Years, I am going to wait to post them.

Today I went to Walmart before supper to pick up a few things. As I was going through the check out I was carded. "So what was I buying," you ask?

"Tobacco products?" No never, I would reply.

"An arsonal of firearms?" Nope not me, I would answer.

"Oh" you say, "I knew it you were a secret winno!" No, I answer.

Here are my purchases can you possibly guess what I was buying that needed carding?

I told the lady that she was kiding right. I was a little offended and I can't believe that you have to be carded for this sort of thing now. I mean it has been a stable of craft projects as long as I can remember. So what is it, you ask?
Yep, that's right, it's rubber cement glue. Is this a Walmart only rule? Is this a Florida law? Has anyone else ever heard of this? I mean what can you possibly do with it? Are they worried that three year olds will be eating it? I mean who lets a three year old loose in Walmart with enough money to buy glue for dinner? Rubber cement clue is the best glue for pictures and the like because 1) it never wrinkles and 2) it's now acid free making it great for scrapbooks. Why do you need to be 18 to buy glue?

Gary and I have an apartment in one of the many Carlton Arms subdivisions. Last night they had their Christmas doings for those of us that live here. Of course Gary and I can't pass up a free meal so we went. We walked from our place to the front of the subdivision which is a pretty good walk. After all there are something like 900 apartments here. We took a few pictures of the place all lit up. We live across from the tennis courts and the second club house and here is how it looked...
...and the doings were at the main clubhouse. It looked very pretty despite the fact that it was pouring down rain. Perhaps I'll get a better picture to post. It's quite commical to drive up and see all the Christmas lights with the palm trees. I couldn't believe it last night when we were sitting around in T-shirts and shorts that it is only eleven (now 10 days till Christmas).

Gary's niece (I guess that makes her mine too, haha) turned one on Wednesday. We had her birthday party last Sunday after church. We had a really good time visiting with each other even if Brystal had no clue what was going on.

She played with ribbon with her Aunt Joan Ellen after she pulled it off of one of her presents. Then she opened presents with her Daddy (James). Next she played with some stuff with her Moma' (Heather). Finally we got some cake while Brystal...

...dove into her cake.

Last Saturday, we went to the annual Varnum Cane Grinding. Gary's mother's uncle hosts it every year the second weekend in November. I had been to a cane grinding on mule day in West Tennessee, but it was different. They had an interesting grinder that you feed two shoots into at a time. We chewed cane and watched them make three batches of cane syrup while eating up the last of last year's with biscuits. The syrup was very different from what I have had of Alabama cane, I personally would prefer molasses any day.

The one down point, I forgot to bring my camera. Better luck next year.

So even though it's incredibly difficult to get into the Christmas spirit when everyone you know is still wearing flip-flops and shorts, and it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 80 outside. Despite all of this, we put up our Christmas tree shortly after we got back here from Alabama.
It's a cute tree, and a bit short. I miss some of the traditional ordinments that we hang at home. Our tree needs a golden snowflake, a little sheperd boy, and a bell. But it does have a few really sweet things: a tree skirt I made myself, and the raindeer that my grandparents got me for my first Christmas.

I couldn't begin to list all the things that I'm grateful for, Linda I believe tried, but I'm not even going to. However this year more than ever I have many things to be thankful for. For the first Thanksgiving ever I have this pretty, amazing and loving husband. Also, being so very far from home I have learned the hard way just how close I was to my family, and how very hard it is to be away from them.

Like Chris this is my very favorite holiday. For one thing it is the only day that we as a country recognize is a day to thank our Lord for all his many gifts. For another thing, time with family is always time well spent. Finally, unlike Christmas with my Dad's family there aren't a dozen (give or take) grandkids asking the eternal question... "When can we open presents?"

This year, the holiday was even sweeter as I traveled home with my hubby by my side, and got to see my newest cousin for the first time. Little Emily Lynn was born three weeks before our wedding. If she had been four weeks, Emily and Rachel would have come to the wedding. She has the biggest prettiest eyes I have ever seen! She was very much in high demand, among all of us cousins not to mention her many aunts and uncles. I did have her long before Benji, my youngest brother took her, then Mother some how managed to keep her all through supper, before Matthew, one of my other brothers took her.

However, Emily wasn't the only new face this year. Matthew brought his girlfriend, Kat. They have been friends for some time, and I have been excitedly waiting for them to start dating. She has been coming to church with him some and asking alot of questions, so maybe that's a good sign. Also, it was the first time for me to meet Billy, Grandma's fiance' it sure is good to see her so happy. Finally we had a ball playing Pictionary, Balderdash, and Gestures. Here's some pictures of Gary and I playing, with Benji laughing hysterically.
The best part of all is that all the Grandkids were here. It's the first holiday in a while that we were all home, no small feat as there are 12 of us living everywhere from D.C. to Florida.

So what exactly makes a home a home? I refer to almost any place that I feel comfortable in as home. I go home to Alabama to my parents. We go home to anyone's house at Zion's Rest. I go home to Gary's parents upon occasion. Yes, I am slowing referring to Florida as home. Gary and I talk about heading home to our apartment.

So when did this place become home? Was it when we put up the paint that we weren't suppose to? Or when we finally got all of the furniture in and situated? I was referring to it as home before we were married and I was living here, so what made it home and when did that happen?

Gary and I feel we have been blessed to have such a beautiful, nice little apartment, and it is our home, however, it's also not our home. Ultimately it's still an apartment that we never get any closer to owning. Since I'm now doing so database work for a realtor, Gary has liberated me to keep an eye open for anything under $125,000. Not that we have any money saved, but that would be a steal in Florida. Well, I've found a few places and know Amanda and Eric have decided to sell their house. It's on family land surrounded by family, in fact it's more than an acre which is a really big deal in Florida. It's a little more than we were wanting to spend, but it might be swingable. Anyway, the whole point here is that we would like to have a house, cause you kinda need that before you go for kids (not that we are planning to have any soon), and we are praying about it and would appreciate it if you would too!

(I'm cleaning off the table after dinner while Gary is polishing off his last biscuit.)

Me: "Oh honey, you might want to take a look at this. My student loan people want their money back."

Gary B: "Ok."

(He starts to read and all of a sudden burst into laughter.)

Gary B: "Congratulations! You now have to work for a living for the rest of your life!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So I got a letter from the student loan people today, and no joke it says in big, bold, 20 point font Congratulations! Then underneath that it says at I have the exciting and important responsiblity to repay my student loans. No joke in those words.
Maybe I should start looking for another few classes to take, huh?
Gary has a cousin who is expecting a baby- Jay and Amber Ferrell. There have been a few markers for Down's Syndrome, and I know that they would crave your prayers in the matter, and for strength for them. If you want to know more of the details, check out the link under friends that says, "Life with the Ferrell's." I won't try to explain it all here, when you could understand Amber far better.
Also, for all the prayers offered up for Amanda, Gary's sister, we are very grateful. She is slowly recovering, and hopefully will continue to get better and better. The PB grapevine is wonderful.
November 4, 2006, I received a message from a Gary on myspace. He had posted a meeting that his church was having in November on the Primitive Baptist Friends Group Page. I had replied in the group comments that I liked the preacher that he would be hearing. On November 4, I received my first personal email from him and I replied.
“Well you are more than welcome to come to Florida it would be great. Oh I forgot to introduce myself. I am Gary C********* I am a member of Little Union in Lithia Fl which is about 45 minutes from Tampa. Hey you might know a friend of mine his name is Elder James Allen he just moved up to Alabama to pastor a church in Alabama. He was a member of our church before. I cannot remember the name of the church right now something like Pilgrim's rest maybe. So where in Alabama are you from? I have been to some places like Vestavia, Holly Pond, even the capital when Elder Hunt was Governor there. Well talk to you later.
In Christian Love,
Gary”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“It's nice to meet you! My name is Danielle M******, and I'm a member of Elgin's Crossroads, in a very obscure place in North Alabama. Elder Randy Dillon is our pastor. I believe I heard Brother James preach earlier this fall at the Mount Zion Association. Pilgrim's Rest may be where he is at, I'm not recalling off hand either. Unfortunately I waited too long to request off at work, and they made the schedule up early so alas, I won't be able to come. I really enjoy Brother Adam. In any event I'll be praying for ya'll's meeting.

I never would have imagined that a year later we would be happily married and in Florida. The Lord certainly moves in mysterious ways. I thank Him daily for the blessing that Gary is in my life. He is unlike anyone I’ve ever met. He takes so very seriously the commandment that the Lord gives that husbands are to love their wives as Christ did the church. He takes care of me and cares for me in a way no one else ever has. He is simply amazing.

Like all people he has his faults: the way that he lays wet towels on the bed, the floor, or on my wooden chairs even though I tell him everyday to just hang it up; the way that dirty socks always seem to end up on the coffee table next to his drink; the way he hates on the cat. He’s not perfect, but he sure seems close to me. He knows all of my faults in detail and I was very frank. However, he loves me for who I am, not who I’ve been.

The most amazing thing to me is that there was a time in my life that I almost walked away from the church, and if I had of one of the joys I would have missed out on in life is marriage to a good man. I can’t believe sometimes just how stupid I was in the past.

However, he is my husband and no one else in the galaxy can say that! So here’s to you honey and our first year together. I hope that I can spend the rest of my life with you.
