The Joy of My Salvation

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. ~Habakkuk 3:18

Ruth,

Today my little girl you are 8 months old. It's unbelievable just how much you have grown, and just how fast! You were 8 lbs and 19 1/2 inches at birth, 10 lbs 4 oz and 21 1/2 inches at 1 month, 11 lbs 15 oz and 22 1/4 inches at 2 months, and 15 lbs ans 7 oz and 25 3/4 inches at 5 1/2 months. At your doctors appointment a couple of weeks ago, you were up to 16 lbs 12 oz and 26 inches long.

You are getting around now. There has been a time or two that you have coordinated your knees and hands to crawl a step or two, but for the most part you lay on your stomach, stretch out your legs and push with the tips of your toes, then you stretch out your arms, and grab with your fingers and pull and wiggle yourself toward whatever toy you are trying to get. Since you are heavier than Britt was at this age, I'm not surprised too much that you are crawling or pulling up on the furniture yet, but I doubt it'll be long. You still like to rock on your hands and knees and often look like you'll be taking off after Britt, as you laugh and smile.

You are still an incredibly happy child. You got your first pop on the leg a few nights ago from Daddy for misbehaving, I told him you are still too small to know better. Most of the time, I can look stern and say no, and you immediately stop and get teary eyed. Sometimes if Britt is getting fussed at and he's near you in the floor you assume we are fussing at you and cry. It's so pitiful.
You are up to eating twice a day, two servings of cereal, one of fruit, and one of vegetables. You like applesauce and squash best, and the only thing you really dislike is green beans. You chew on absolutely everything from toys to Britt's hair when he lays in your lap. We aren't regularly giving you a sippy cup with juice yet, but while Grandmother and Granddaddy were here you seemed to all of a sudden make a connection with it. You don't hold it up very well on your own, but when it's up you sure have figured out how to suck that thing down. You still have no teeth, so I guess I'm crazy. Who knows when you'll get them. I thought my allergies were acting up over the weekend, but I guess I had a cold, because you've had a bit of one yesterday and today. That's another first.

People continue to be surprised by how easy going you are. You will sit in the floor and just watch people, and when you catch their eye, oh how you grin. You are only fussy about 6 in the evening when Daddy and I are working on supper and different things. You love to be held and cuddled. You nestle up against my neck and suck on your thumb, and sing your sleepy song. You love to talk to your Daddy, and especially enjoy laughing and babbling at Britt whenever he pays you the slightest attention.

We love you so very much,
Momma

I'm now big enough to swing with Britt at the park. I like swinging outside even better than I like my swinger in the house. I like the wind and the trees and all the sunshine. Britt and I have lots of fun swinging together. When Ahna and Grumps where here, I took a break in the middle to play with my rattle with Ahna. It was a fun game. I would play and then drop it, and she would fetch it EVERY time. Then I would take it back and grin at her, and we would do it all over again. While we were at the park, Daddy also taught me to play chicken. I'm not sure who had more fun doing that Daddy or Grumps, they were both laughing so much. Britt and I were trying to out squeal the other one. It was a great day.

I like the slides at the park. About the only think I like more than the slides is the swings. Momma usually carries me and Ruth down to the park about once a week while Daddy is at school. Sometimes we get some lunch first and eat at the park too. It's our chance to get out of the house during the week. Momma hates to be cooped up at home all the time. I wonder if chickens hate to be cooped up?
Anyway, while Grendy and Grandmomer was here, we went down to the park. I got to show them all the swings and the slides. I've also been very persuasive in getting people to go down the slides with me. Momma even got proof on the video camera. Also, while Grumps and Ahna were here, we went to the park. In addition to getting people to go down the slides with me, Grumps and Ahna brought me some very fun bubbles to go in my Easter basket. I'm not sure who had more fun with that Grumps or me. I chased bubbles all over the park, and I was wore out. We had to go home and drink some juice after that. Then Grumps and Ahna took naps while I played upstairs. I've had a good time with all of our company.

Updating the prayer request list tonight, we have added Sis. Janice the mother of Sis. Sherry Crawford. They found cancer and did surgery on her foot a few weeks back to remove it. The site where they did surgery appears to be healing well, and the skin graft seem to have taken. However, testing returned the news that the cancer had already spread to other parts of the body. they will be meeting with Doctors again this week to determine a course of action, and believe the will be removing more lymph nodes soon. They are a dear family, loving servants of Christ, and have been so wonderful to welcome, comfort and pray for our little family since moving up here and attending MacClenny Church. Please pray for Sis. Janice.

I've recently started sticking Ruth in the bathtub with Britt, now that she is big enough to balance well, even with Britt as rowdy as he is. The relationship the two of them seem to have, warms my heart. Britt is forever trying to take care of Ruth. He brings her endless amounts of toys, and pets her hair, and is forever trying to hold her. Now that she is in the bathtub with him, he feels it's his duty to help with her bath. He "scrubbies" her hair, but far more gently than he washes his own, and especially loves to wash her feet. He talks and talks to her and laughs and shares his rubber duckies, and she grins and kicks and babbles back. I hope they are able to retain the joy they seem to have together for a long time, and not become siblings who can't stand to be in the other's presence.

Several of you may know that Gary bought a moped when we first moved to Gainesville. He had the idea that he could ride it to school and that way I would have a car when I needed one. Even though it was a good idea, it didn't really pan out so well. He rode it most of the summer and part of the fall, but I just didn't feel good about him on it, and he felt like we were a little to far away from campus for him to be able to make it through the traffic safely. We've been meaning to sell it, but we just haven't gotten around to it. Gary posted it on craigslist back a few weeks ago, and has been talking to a girl who has decided to buy it.
So of course, yesterday Gary was riding it around one last time to make sure everything worked alright, and of course Britt wanted a ride. So Gary carried him on a few loops around the parking lot. Britt of course, LOVED it and didn't want to quit riding. Gary told me if I wanted on it, this was my last chance. I might have ridden with him, but I had no interest in trying to drive it myself. Since there was no one to watch Britt if I got on with him, I just watched them ride. I can already tell Britt is going to be like Nicholas trying to go faster and faster, pulling stupid stunts on his bicycle and then losing teeth. I recall one particularly spectacular wreak, when I went to get Mother because I was sure he was either dead or had broken something. Within an hour he was at it again.

The last weekend in March, we traveled over to Panama City, FL to attend the Gulf Coast Fellowship Meeting at St. Andrew Church. Me and the kids rode over with my grandparents on Thursday, and Gary caught up with us Friday evening. We heard alot of good sermons by many different men.
Grandmother and Granddaddy had to leave first thing Saturday morning, but we were able to spend the entire weekend with Gary's parents and grandparents. They were all alot of help while juggling the kids, especially before Gary arrived. The kids did really well. Ruth is getting to the age that I can't sit her on the bench next to Britt during services because they get into mischief together. Britt grins at her and she babbles back. Ruth is playing with a toy, and Britt steals it. Britt drinks his cup, and the whole time Ruth is protesting and trying to get it for herself. It's amusing.
Britt did really well except for Saturday afternoon. I suppose he had just finally had enough of sitting on the bench. He went out three times during song service and once more during preaching - for throwing song books, shredding a roll on the bench, rediscovering and shredding a roll on the bench, and then refusing to get quiet. He was tired and it was a long weekend out of the routine, which always does Britt in. But after the last time (and the real key, Daddy locating a cup of milk) he settled down.
My favorite sermon from the weekend was Bro. Philip Conley who preached on the old paths. He used the verse in a way that I had never considered before. Jeremiah 6:16 "Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein." Bro. Philip told us that the old paths were those enduring things that God ordained before the foundation of the world. He told us that the key to the first is that first we must stand. There are many ways that we can go, many ways and places that we can be, first we must stop and then see where we are, before we can determine if we are where we should be. After we stand and see, then we must ask others. We cannot just go off on our own, but in the multitude of many councilors is wisdom. When we stand and see we must inquire of those who already know the way. When any one will not council and ask of others they run the risk of straying. After all of that, if we will walk in those paths then we get the rest of God. This isn't a sit down and do nothing rest, but rather he stressed, it is the rest we get from laboring in the kingdom of God. The type of rest Christ talks about when he tells us to take his yoke upon us for his yoke is easy and his burden is light.
It was a great weekend of good preaching and good time with the family. One thing that I was finally able to do was get a generational picture four generations of Cunningham men. Oh were they hysterical. Making faces, complaining and joking the entire time. It was a much needed weekend away.

Grandmother and Granddaddy came down for a couple of weeks ago now. We hadn't seen any of my family since Christmas, so it was nice to have them come and visit. Britt had a great time with Grandmother making her read to him all day every day. I don't know how many times they read "Duck, Duck, Moose" and "A Mother for Choco" but I'm sure Grandmother has them memorized by now.
Granddaddy wooled the little boy a time or two, but Britt most especially loved giving him "running hugs." He would start running from a cross the room and tackle Granddaddy on the couch with a hug, giggle, and then go at it again. He loved showing Granddaddy all of his tools and his rocking horse, of course the little boy doesn't understand that Granddaddy made that rocking horse, but one day he'll get it.
Of course the both spoiled Ruth holding and rocking her all the time. She's just so cuddly and babbles so much now when she is held. Grandmother told her that next time she sees her that she had better be able to patty cake. She would just grin and laugh at Grandmother every time they patty caked. Granddaddy took lots of naps with her sleeping with him on his chest. She has missed all the extra cuddle time this week. And of course she tried a smidgen of ice cream. Something not to be repeated for several months anyway...

Do you like my new big boy underwear? My favorite pair has a tractor on them, and some have cars, and others have dinosaurs, and this pair has a horse on it. I like carrying them around better than wearing them, but I'm getting use to them. Momma says I'm going to be a big boy and learn to use the toilet like Daddy. I have no clue what that means, but I get to wear underwear and flush the toilet alot, which I love to do.

We have been on the go a lot lately. I was sure that things would slow down after Christmas, but it's been just as busy if not more. We have traveled down to Plant City every weekend this year but 4, and one of those we went over to Panama City. Needless to say, I'm a bit behind on the blogging.
Over Gary's spring break we went down to the Strawberry Festival in Plant City. We went on two different days and had such a good time. On Monday they had the lamb show. Amanda wanted the kids to all come up, she helps with the show. they have a pee-wee showmanship catagory where 3-5 year olds can practice showing someone else's lamb in the show. So, we carried Brystal up there to meet James and Heather. Brystal showed a black, short legged lamb, and did great. She loved it. Britt mostly just loved petting all the sheep. After the sheep we walked around and ate with James and Heather and the kids had a good time playing with each other. Then they watched our two kids while we went into the Clint Black concert. We had a great time.
We also went back on Wednesday to see the steer show. It was really interesting. I hadn't been to one before, and would have liked to have seen the auction too, but maybe next year. I could have kicked myself for failing to bring along the camera that night, because Britt was in rare form. There was a roller coaster right outside of the steer tent and as the cars would climb higher and higher and he would get more and more excited until he reached fever pitch, and then down they would plunge and he would squeal with delight. I would ask him, "Are you watching? Are you watching?" Even about the 20th time we sat there watching he was still just as delighted. It's a moment I hope I never forget.

Britt was sharing his love for Allison Krause and all things bluegrass today with Ruth. He was sure to point out each "ben-jo", "tar-tar", "till tar-tar", "will tar-tar" and "be bass". (That being interrepted would be each banjo, guitar, steel guitar or dobro, mandolin or what Britt thinks is a little guitar, and a big bass.)

Ruth,

Momma has been slacking so this is a few days overdue, but you are now 7 months old! You have mastered sitting up on your own, and have figured out how to fall forward on to your hands and get your feet behind you, sometimes you just sit like that and rock, while watching Britt as if you are about to take off after him. I suppose one of these days you just might.

For two months now your teeth have been here one day and gone the next. I can't always see them, but I can usually feel them. We started you on baby food this month. At first you weren't sure what to do with the Rice cereal but in no time, you were sucking it off the spoon and now you are getting more and more down. You liked the Rice cereal alright, and you liked it even better when we started adding prune juice to it. You don't seem to care for the oatmeal or carrots as much though. Today, Daddy tried some squash for you, and you seemed to like it pretty well. We've also been trying to give you a sippy cup some, and for the most part you let it all run out of your mouth, it'll just take some more practice for you to get the hang of it. As soon as I collect a few more jars, I'm going to start making your food like I did for Britt.

Since starting on baby food you sleep through the night every night from about 11 till we wake you up between 7 and 8 to feed you. It has been such a relief to get a little more sleep out of you, especially since Britt is waking up all hours of the night now. You really don't have much of a routine, and that's Momma's fault. Each day looks so very different, and every weekend we seem to be traveling somewhere, but you don't appear any worse for wear. You are still content to go and do whatever, whenever as long as you are held alot and getting plenty of attention, once again a real relief since anything out of the ordinary seems to upset Britt's routine these days.

You haven't been quiet as talkative over the last few months, but I think it's because you appear to be concentrating on figuring out how to move around. Once last week you even managed to move both of your hands as if to crawl before you lost your balance and down you fell again on your stomach.

You still are a very smiley child, laughing most at Britt, but you seem to prefer Julia to all of your cousins. You and her seem to have some understanding, that leaves me and your Aunt Heather a little worried what mischief the two of you will be getting into in a couple of years. Momma and Daddy love you very much, and hope you retain that sunny disposition.

Love,
Momma

Last night I filled this year's quota for cooking supper. See around our house, Gary does all the cooking. He's a great cook, and what's more he loves to cook and experiment in the kitchen. Me on the other hand, I really hate cooking. Most of food doesn't turn out very good, I don't like to experiment and even when things turn out well, I can't really enjoy cooking when it means you spend a couple of hours prepping and cooking a meal that takes 20 mins to eat.

Yesterday though, I cooked supper. We had Eggplant - Chicken Parmigian. Something I've been wanting to eat for a while, and it didn't turn out too bad, it takes way to long to have very often. Not to mention you have to pan fry the eggplant and the chicken, and I really hate frying anything on the stove. Then we had Rosemary bread and Italian salsa. I wanted to make Crusty French Bread, but maybe next week, since we found someone selling fresh bread at the farmer's market this week. Gary thought the rosemary was too strong in it, but I thought it went really well with the salsa, that was the highlight of the meal. Of course after the fact Gary informed me that he doesn't like eggplant. I think we are down to only two vegetables that we both like - brocoli and green beans.
Another amusing highlight for the night was giving Britt a cup without a lid. He found more uses for that cup and the 2 Tablespoons of water that were in it than I would have imagined possible. He drank and blew bubbles in it. He proceeded to put his chicken in it, stir, declare "I coo-k", and then pull it out and eat the water logged chicken. (Have I mentioned just how strange I find the little boy to be?)

The next thing that Mrs. Rivero suggests in her book, “The Homeschooling Option: How to Decide When It’s Right for Your Family” is to lay out your concerns and fears about homeschooling. This way you can look at the pros and cons and decide if you think you can over come the obstacles or not, and if the decision is worth it for your family.

Do I know enough to teach my child? While, I’ve been through college and took some education classes, and have always planned to teach, I still have this doubt. I planned to teach high school history, I don’t have the foggiest idea about how you would teach a child to read. I don’t really even remember learning to read, I’ve just been doing it, seemingly, forever. While, Gary is more draw to the initial benefits of homeschooling, I am more interested in the benefits for high school aged kids. As a result, I wonder how in the world am I suppose to be able to provide my children with adequate math and science skills? It’s been awhile since I did that, and I never was able to teach myself math. While I did well in it, I mostly attribute that to Daddy’s patience and Mr. Henderson’s skill as a teacher. I still didn’t like the subject and I’m not sure how much I’ve retained. I strongly believe that in this day and age you need a good foundation in science, math, and computer skills to get a good job. I feel this is especially important for boys if they have a desire to be the sole provider for their household. While I know there are homeschooling groups and co-ops out there is it wrong for me to consider homeschooling knowing that I can’t provide a chemistry lab?

Finances are my biggest concern for me. I’ve told Gary if we were to do this I would want to do it right. If you can’t go to any of the places you are studying about, then you might as well do the public school thing and get your 3 or 4 field trips a year. When we study the civil war, lets then head up to see my folks, and take a day trip over to Shiloh. Oh when we are doing biology lets go out to one of the gazillion nature reserves or state parks around us. If we go the curriculum route, you are looking at anywhere from $300 to $1000 a year per child. I don’t know what job Gary might get, but I know that it won’t make that possible. Even if I build my own curriculum, borrow extensively from a library, and buy books second hand, it’s a real expense. If we can’t afford to give our kids a great education, I think it would be far better to put them in the school system, and supplement that at home, the way my parents did for us.

I wonder too if my kids will respect me as a teacher, when I am also Momma. Once again, from my own experience, while I asked Mother once to homeschool me, I don’t think it would have ever worked. We didn’t have much mutual respect, especially on my part. And I don’t see how you can learn from someone that you won’t listen to. I mean seriously, the kids drive me crazy now. Imagine how crazy I’ll be after homeschooling several for 12+ years.

I know I shouldn’t care, if it’s the right decision, but I can’t help but wonder what my parents and grandparents will think. As I’ve mentioned before, we are a seriously strong public school family. And while I loved going to school in many respects, and I’m not making any statement about they way I was raised, my homeschooling parents say that their parents felt like their decision to homeschool was a slap in the face, criticizing the way they raised their children. I’m sure they will be disappointed at least or think that I’m crazy and shortchanging their grandkids future. And I can’t blame them for that, I wonder it as well. Will they really be prepared for college? What if I completely end up screwing up their future? What happens if Britt is bright and interested in nuclear physics and astronomy, and when he leaves home to pursue those dreams, I’ve failed to provide a good enough base in math and science for him to reach those goals. What if I rob him of the chance to do something truly great with his life, go to the moon, and bring Grumps back a moon rock? I know if we were to start and realize that for us it’s a mistake that they could then be tested and enrolled in public school, but what if I don’t find out it’s been a mistake until Britt is 20 and can’t make a go of it in college?

On another level, I wonder if homeschooling would be robbing my child of some of the joys of childhood. Going to buy that brand new Strawberry Shortcake book bag before kindergarten, and I still remember picking out that purple Beauty and the Beast lunch box before second grade. I remember my epic fail in second grade of spelling face “f-a-s-e” that year in the spelling bee. I remember going to my first football game in 2nd or 3rd grade and being all decked out in black and gold. What about in 4th grade when we all rode the school bus down to Montgomery to spend the day at the state capital with my best friends and those teachers I adored. I remember having silent lunch several times because our class wouldn’t behave so me and Brock made up stories, and then talked about the stories on the playground, and drew the characters. What about the spirit stick and pep rallies, and homecoming in high school? What about the junior/senior prom? There were a lot of moments that I wouldn’t want to relive about high school, but there were a lot of good times too. Is what we would gain from homeschooling worth what they lose in a public school?

The final downside is personal. I want to teach, I’ve always wanted to teach. While this would give me that ability to do some teaching since Gary strongly prefers me to be a stay at home mom, what I really want to do is finish my masters and get my doctorate and teach and research as a college professor. If we homeschool, I can’t think about going back to school when the kids get into school. And I doubt that after they are grown that I can think about having a real career. Instead, I would be spending a lot of time and effort to do something myself that could be done just as well through the public school system. Quite frankly I don’t know that I want to do this.

Britt is constantly trying to pick up older women on campus. Every couple of weeks I like to pick a day when Gary only has a one hour class, and I keep the car. Sometimes we go run errands in town first, but last Wednesday we just walked with Gary toward class. Gary's classes are in the McCarty building, and out in front of McCarty is a nice grassy area surrounded by several other buildings. This is important, because I can throw down a blanket and Britt can run around and I don't have to worry about him getting into the road and getting run over. Though from time to time there is the crazy speed demon on what must be a 50 speed bike, or then again that might be exaggerating a little.
Britt, as you all know by now, loves sticks, and leaves, and dirt. I understand this to be characteristic of all little boys, but I've never seen one quiet so fascinated as he is to just sit up to an hour in one place digging and examining each leave, stick and acorn that he comes across. He came running to show me a "stick leaf acorn" or an acorn that had begun to germinate the other day. It had sent up a shoot which had produced one tiny leaf, only to be mowed up by a weed-eater. He was very excited, and carried it around in one hand while he found other sticks to bring to me.
So needless to say Britt who is delighted to explore the great outdoors loves this large grassy lawn on campus. However, this past week he did more than just examine sticks. He sat right by the sidewalk so that each and every girl that walked by he could stop and smile at. In the course of the hour that we were there LOTS of girls walked by. Three of the girls had red hair and Britt not only gave them a smile, but said "Heeeeeey" or "Hi-deeeeey" and of course all three had to stop and talk to him. Another day a girl came by and dropped a book, and Britt ran to get it and give it to her. He then thought he needed to walk along side of her, until she passed the point that he doesn't get to cross. He stood there and waved, and said, "bye-bye gurl, bye-bye."
Meanwhile, Ruth and I get a good kick out of sitting on our blanket and watching Britt roam. We almost always sit in the same place which has a sidewalk on all 4 sides which Britt knows not to cross. Out of habit I always have a book in the diaper bag, but I never get to read. I'm always worried that Britt is going to take off after someone. Since Gary's class is between 11:40 and 12:40 there are always tons of kids coming through with lunch, and of course Britt has tried to beg for "fwish fwies" (french fries) on more than one occasion. You would think we never feed the boy the way he begs for those things. It's always a really nice day though, to get out of the house, watch Britt play, and then walk around campus with Gary, and to think it's all free - well, if you don't count the tuition.

Hello everyone, Momma has finally decided that I am old enough to blog. I won't be writing every week because we have so much to do, but I will from time to time post on Wednesdays, after all someone has to set things straight that Britt messes up on Tuesdays. Like yesterday, he failed to tell you the whole story about the beach. For example, I was having a nice time on the blanket watching everything, and Momma was trying to read her book, but she kept having to run after him, until finally she gave up and carried us all in the house. I mean come on, why was I punished for his bad behavior?

Anyway, I have more exciting news to share than that. I'm getting to eat real food. Infact, I'm eating while Momma types for me. It works great, I just tell her what I want it to say, and she types it up, just like she helps Daddy out by typing his papers. Well, I'm about ready for my afternoon nap, so I'll leave you with some video. I wasn't really sure what I thought about that rice cereal at first, but now I've decided it's just fine if that means I get to sit up at the table with everyone else at supper time.

This past weekend I went to the beach. I didn't go all by myself though. Daddy drove me and Momma and Ruth down on Friday. Then he helped "Gren-dy" (Granddaddy) Garland work on the beach house, while Momma took me and Ruth out in the sand and the water. I played in the sand just a little and then the waves washed over my feet and it was so cold, that I ran screaming all the way back to the house. I was telling them that no one in their right mind goes to the beach in February, but Momma said that she doesn't understand me, that I should learn to speak English. On Saturday, I went back out, but only because Me-Maw brought me some friends to get into trouble with. Me-Maw and Moot (Mister) brought Lilli, "Ju-Ju" (Julia), and "Bwy-le" (Brystal). We had all sorts of fun running all over the beach and climbing on the wall. We kept making Mister take us down to the water, and we all brought buckets of water back to dump in the sand. I didn't want to get the waves to touch me at all, but I loved it when Mister dumped water all over me. In fact, he was using a big bucket to fill up everyone's little bucket, and I kept running up to him and making him spill it all over me. The only thing funnier, is when Brystal snuck up behind him and threw that really cold salt water all over his back. I sure wish Me-Maw had caught that on film. We had a good time.

I've done a terrible job of blogging lately. We've been on the go so much that I hardly have time to do laundry and pack again, let alone blog about all the happenings. Two weekends ago now, we were able to travel down to Vero Beach for the Florida Fellowship Meeting. There were several elders who had promised to be there, but came down with the flu and couldn't be with us, but we had a wonderful time, and heard many great sermons. Friday morning started off with Elder. Michael Gowens preaching on names, and telling us that when God gave someone a name in the Bible it had great meaning. He primarily talked about Jacob and the change that he underwent and the Lord changing his name to Isreal. He was followed by Elder J. C. Stanaland who preached about when we were overwhelmed that we should go to God in prayer. It was a wonderful start to the meeting. Friday afternoon Bro. Bobby Willis preached about the Mount of Transfiguration, and brought out some points I hadn't considered before. The Elder. Michael Gowens preached again from Joshua about the battle of Jerico and used it to tell us Four Things He Knows about Tomorrow. I especially liked that sermon. Especially since I tend to worry and fret, it was an encouraging and comforting message.
Between afternoon and night services, Britt and Joshua decided that they didn't think we were getting back to Church fast enough, so the to of them got up front with song books and sang and very animatedly beat time. Britt mostly sung the word Grace over and over at the top of his lungs, while Joshua actually sang a few songs. Of course Britt kept insisting to Joshua that every song number was actually 210, but they managed to stay on the same page, and I just kept laughing watching them. That night Bro. Marty Smith followed by Bro. Jonathan Davis and Bro. Ronald Lawrence. Bro. Marty used the second verse of Kindred in Christ to open his thoughts. Bro. Jonathan spoke from the 22nd Psalm about the suffering of Christ and made the comment that this was Christ's obituary printed 400 years plus ahead of time.
The kids were great throughout the meeting. Britt sat right next to me or in my lap most of the time, since we had services in a conference hall at the local hotel and it's harder to keep him in a chair than on a pew. Anyway, he would sing at the top of his lungs and wave his hand around. In between each song he kept asking, "I sing more?" He was always so disappointed when the song service was over. He said a loud, "A-MEN" at the end of most all the prayers and sermons. Then in between services he thought he needed to walk around and shake hands with all the old baptist. It was pretty obvious that this wasn't his first church meeting. I wanted so badly to get a picture of him and Gary together in their brown suits, but before Church Britt couldn't get still and during Church on Saturday he fell asleep. Ruth did really well. Her Aunt Manna and Me-Maw held her alot. She was happy to be spoiled. Everyone remarked about how happy she was. She didn't cry or fuss once all weekend.
On Saturday morning we heard Eld. Ronald Lawrence preach a good sermon on the open tomb. He was followed by Eld. Marty Hoskins who preached on license, liberty, and legalism. El. Jeff Paterson closed the morning with a sermon on election. He gave us his thoughts on a scripture, that I want to do a little more studying on because it was an interesting idea. Saturday afternoon Bro. Herman Griffen and Bro. J.C. Stanaland preached together, but I missed most of it, because first I had to carry Britt out for a diaper change and cup (I managed to leave it in the room), and then I had to carry Ruth out to feed her (since I left my cover in the room). Bro. Herman preached on David's last words and Bro. J.C. preached on Christ as a stone, and went to several scriptures to pull adjectives that described him as a stone. It was another good sermon. I'm waiting on the sermons from the meeting to hear the end of that one. That night the crowd was pretty small but we heard Bro. Marty Hoskins and Bro. Glen Blanchard. We stayed over in Vero and heard Bro. John Givannio from Wintergarden Church introduce and Bro. Chris preach, and enjoyed visiting with them at lunch before heading home. It was such a wonderful meeting full of fellowship and council from many preachers, and a good time visiting with members from our sister churches.
