The Joy of My Salvation

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. ~Habakkuk 3:18

I need to brag on my brother a minute, the kid's Uncle Benji.

Our finances have gone from bad to worse since last June, when Gary was laid off. He's had a few jobs since then, but nothing permanent. We've gotten by on unemployment, food stamps, gifts from fellow Church members, and loans from our parents. To be honest when I do the budget, I'm still unsure how everything has gotten paid so far. We are incredibly blessed with a good support system.

However, things have gotten to the point that we aren't sure if we can keep the house, or if we will have to sell it. So we needed to gut even the little things left in the budget. Things like dog food. The dogs were already not getting heart worm preventative, vet care, or grooming appointments. We had long since done away with eating out as a family. We are trying to only make one trip to town a week, other than Church on Sunday. So, I finally agreed we needed to rehome the dogs, for them and for the budget. It was a hard decision for me, because I'm an animal person. I have had Scout from a pup, and worked with him a lot. I got Ember as a rescue at a year, and never wanted her to not have a home again.

Telling the kids, over supper though, was the worst part. You see Scout is Britt's dog. He was his brother, when he didn't have any brothers. He is who has had read to for years, to overcome dyslexia. He is the one who comes up with new things to train Scout to do. He is the one who begs for the dog to sleep in his bed at night. Like any 14 year old boy there are times that the dog is neglected a bit in light of video games, but Scout is his dog. Ember is Ruth's dog. She has worked hard to train her, because Ember has a harder time focusing than Scout, and because we didn't have her from the beginning. She sits and talks with her when she won't share things with the rest of us. She has plans of eventually training her to do agility. Like any 12 year old girl there are times she complains about brushing her out or taking her out, but Ember is her dog. Telling them was awful. Ruth teared up, but didn't say anything until she went to rant to Ember the next afternoon. Britt on the other hand had wracking sobs, and offered to sell every thing he had to keep the dogs.

Britt even went to Mister the next day to ask for jobs to do for money. Mister gave him some jobs, but explained that we needed the money he earned to go toward the mortgage, not the dogs. He said he understood, but he was still praying for a way to keep the dogs. Britt then took the money to update their rabies shots and county license. I wanted to tell him the Lord doesn't really care about two dogs, but how could I discourage him like that. However, it appears that the Lord cares about two dogs, because He cares about a little boy, who kept praying full of faith that something would work out.

Earlier this week, my brother called out of the blue while I was driving home. He does every so often just to talk to the kids, after talking a bit he told me that he wanted to take the dogs for the kids, as long as we needed. He had rearranged some stuff with work and the house, and felt like he could take them on. He loves his nieces and nephews, and has constantly proven to have a big heart for them. He knew what the dogs meant to them. He offered to take off Friday and drive down for them, and then drive back home with them on Saturday, since he would have Monday, as President's Day and a federal holiday, to recoup. I was floored.  While no less of a blessing, it isn't surprising that our parents and our Church want to help us out. But I never would have expected my littlest brother to be able to do anything to help us out.

I cannot begin to describe how happy the kids were. Britt told me, I just kept praying for a way to keep them. He then had a long talk with Scout telling him about Uncle Benji, telling him bye, and who knows what else. Ruth squealed, and couldn't believe it. Rebecca needed clarification that it meant we wouldn't have to sell them at all. Kate was almost as happy as Britt, and promptly came home and laid on Scout the way she does and told him how great Uncle Benji was and how the trip would be a fun adventure. The twins just cheered because everyone else was in the car.

Benjamin and Daddy drove down yesterday. He's already got them a grooming appointment, since they are badly in need of one. He asked me to write up everything I could think of about them to help him out, so I put together a notebook. He took the dog training book for trouble shooting and an old baby gate to block the stairs. He wanted their vet records and anything else I had. He asked questions and loved on them.

As they got ready to leave today, I stressed to him I was hoping in 2 or 3 months we would be back on our feet, as Gary has started a new job, and will be on his own starting Monday. However, since it is solely commission, it'll take some time to get back up and running and caught up, so hopefully we can stay in our home. He told me again, to not worry about it, he was prepared to keep them as long as necessary. To not worry about them.

To everyone else they might just be dogs, but while not family in the sense that my kids are, they are part of our family. They matter a great deal to us. They are part of our household. Sure they have bad habits like counter surfing at times, and jumping the fence, but they have far more endearing qualities, like faithful loyalty and loving attention. And it means far more than words can convey that Uncle Benji cared enough about a small thing, among all of the stress we are under, to do this for the kids and me.

Mother has told me that I outta be a pro at this twin thing by now, since I've had more than 30 years of practice.  I will say being Momma is a bit different than the big sister though.  There are some things that are familiar, the endless comments, the double looks.  And of course the craziness, but then again, in a family of four kids, there has always been some craziness, what is two more in the mix?  I'm sure there will be a lot of things that will be more difficult in having two the same age at once, but we are looking forward to the two new little ones in our family.

Sept 22nd was the first day of Fall.  What do you think of when you think of fall?

I think about going to Ahna and Grump's house, where Grumps makes a gianormous pile of leaves and us jumping in.  I think about eating a big, giant piece of turkey.  I think of having fun at Ahna and Grumps' house with Neela.  And that's pretty much it.  Yes, I like fall.  Why wouldn't I?  The leaves are all different kinds of colors, we get to go to Ahna and Grump's house.  Everything is great about fall.  I really like getting to see all the pretty colors of the leaves.  It kinda reminds me of a rainbow, but not in that order.  There is red and orange and yellow and sometimes that really dark purply color.  It's my second favorite part of the year, after Christmas.

My beautiful Katherine,

You are 1 month old today!  And the time has flown.  I love this newborn period, and you have been no exception.  I love the warm cuddly feeling of having you on my chest tucked up under my chin.  I love the excuse to just sit and cuddle all day long.  Seriously we have been doing laundry once a week, and washing dishes every other day, and that's been it.

You don't really have a routine yet.  I am hoping you'll find one pretty quickly after your siblings get back, because it will help the craziness stay to a minimum.  So far you have spent the afternoons alternating between quietly alert and cat naps.  As the evening comes on, and Daddy gets home from work, you have several hours of on again off again eating and insisting on being held.  You don't like to be put down that time of day.  Despite all of our best efforts, we aren't getting you to bed, till after you eat between 12:30 and 1.  Though twice this week we managed to get you down around 11:20.  You wake up once or twice to eat between then and Daddy leaving for work.  Then you eat and sleep hard from then till around 10:30 or 11.  And I go right back to bed with you, piling up pillows on Daddy's side of the bed, to block all the sun light that streams in the big windows by my desk.  For the obvious reason, that your siblings will not sleep till 11 am, this isn't going to work for us long term.

You seem to have a fairly laid back personality.  You don't really like laying flat, whether that's on your belly or back.  You prefer the rocking cradle or being propped up with a pillow on the bed, or laying on my chest.  You really love to sit in the swing during the day.  You have been a good rider in the car.  In fact the only night in the last month that you've gone to bed at a decent time, was last Sunday night when you went to sleep in the car seat and stayed asleep till 3 am.  We just brought you in and let you sleep in the car seat.  You seem to eat well, though it's fairly short and frequent burst.  You don't mind having your clothes or diaper changed.  You don't seem to mind baths.  You love to have your hair brushed, and to hold on to my finger when I'm holding you.  You are smiling more, and I think you might be figuring out how to do it on your own, not just as a reflex, or involuntary thing.  You don't coo or laugh yet, but you do grunt alot.  You are growing, as I have had to put away the newborn sleepers this week, and we moved up to size 1 diapers on Sunday.  You are trying your best to figure out rolling over, and often when you are on our bed, you work your way onto your side and sleep that way.

Though you may feel like an only child, I have promised you this week that you aren't really.  In someways this is alot like when Britt was born - only having one child to take care of.  And lots of quiet down time in the day between feedings, during naps.  But you really have it better than he did.  Back then I still felt like a kid pretending to be an adult most days, and we didn't have a clue what we were doing as new parents.  This time around, we have been so much more low key and after raising the other 3, we have more confidence in our parenting skills/style.  Plus I have the good sense now to take naps with you, and just do what really needs doing around here, not try to catch up on every project or clean everything under the sun.

I've told you about your siblings, but I will again.  You only have one brother, but Momma thinks he's pretty special.  Britt has always been remarkable good with his sisters, I don't think you'll be any exception.  In fact, he's already asked if you can sleep in his room once you start sleeping at night.  He is loving and affectionate.  He likes to sing and has the best imagination.  He wants to take care of others, fight off the bad guys, and share everything he knows.  I'm sure he'll start teaching you about dinosaurs and superheros as soon as he gets home.

Ruth is the oldest of you girls.  She more than any child I've ever met has a giving spirit and a tender heart.  Don't get me wrong, she can be just as stubborn and ornery as the rest, but she wants to do things for others, worries about the feelings of others, and spends her time trying to come up with surprises for others.  She loves anything to do with art and creating things -  drawing, painting, planning a faerie garden.  She's especially happy that you look so much like her.

Rebecca is the wild card, you never know what to expect with her.  She can be loving - hugging on you and serenading you one minute, and then in the next second she can be angry - yelling, stomping and telling you that she doesn't "like you at all."  She is alot of fun, and she has been looking forward to your arrival more than any of the others.  She has talked to you and sung to you the last several months every morning.  She is convinced that you will "be the best sister ever, way better than Ruth."

You have one more sister, one that I only told you about on Sunday.  One who came before you, but who you can't see.  Abigail was born almost two years before you, but she couldn't stay with us.  We have no idea what she would have been like, but I'm sure that she would have been as wonderful and unique as each of you children have been.  She's burried at Little Union, and I like to walk out to see her when I particularly miss her or it's a special occasion.  One day I'm sure we'll get to meet her too.

Katherine, you are the baby.  And while, you have all been very special, very much wanted children, you might be a little better appreciated than your siblings have been.  Britt is my boy.  Ruth we call Sunshine, and Rebecca Starshine.  But you, you are our Rainbow.  And, Momma and Daddy love you so very much.

Love,
Momma

Capture Your Grief - Day 27 - Family is Forever

Today, I'm sharing my very favorite family picture.  I thought for a long while about how to take these pictures.  Every year for Christmas we take a yearly family photo, and I just couldn't do it this past year.  Not when I should have been 9 months pregnant instead of having buried a baby 4 months before.  Infact, the only family picture we took between the day we found out and these, was on Father's Day.  I was snapping a few pictures of Gary with the kids, when Bro. Randy walked up and insisted on me getting in, and him taking one.  I suspect he knew I was having trouble with the idea of family pictures.  I really love this picture because you can see the three we have, but we also have Abigail's empty swing in the background, for the one we miss.  And, even better, we just found out that I was pregnant with our rainbow.  I'm so very happy to know that all seven of us are here, even if you can only see five of us.  And I guess, me knowing and seeing everyone there, is what matters.

Apparently you are not a good fisherman, if you don't tell tall tales.  So, in light of being informed that I needed to share, I'm sharing my fishing story.  Zack has a really nice boat, and he's been deep sea fishing for about the last decade.  He's taken most of the family out several times.  The guys have gone a few times.  Heather is great at hunting and fishing, and she's been a few times.  Joan Ellen also went when they took out some of the nieces.  I however, had never been fishing with Zack and Amanda.

Now, I don't swim all that well, and though I enjoy fishing, I wasn't real excited about being that far way from land.  I went along solely, because Gary wanted to go and I wanted to spend our anniversary together.  I must have lucked out because that morning when we left the water was as smooth as a mirror, and we had a fast and easy ride out.  I was amazed at just how blue the water was out there.  Growing up my favorite color in the big crayon box was cerulean blue, and that's EXACTLY what the water looked like.

Anyway, we caught several fish, that weren't any good so we threw them back.  The most fun was when the Mahi Mahi started swimming around the boat.  The first time they came by we couldn't get them to bite.  Mister said they have such good eyesight, that they can see the hook, if you don't have it pretty well hidden.  They are beautiful fish.  One came right up and bumped the foot I had trailing in the water as I was trying to keep cool.  They came by later though and must have been starving to death, because all of a sudden they were biting anything and everything.  One of the ones I caught I accidently dropped the line before I got it baited again.  No joke.  At one point we had about four flopping around in the boat.  And oh my goodness those fish are fighters.  They will beat themselves to death in the boat, tearing their lips off, bleeding everywhere.  Amanda got slapped upside the head by one.  We lost a few before we could get them in the boat, they flail to the point that they work themselves off the hook while they are in the air before you even get them in the boat.

However, what we were really out to catch was grouper.  After the Mahi Mahi got bored (or in my opinion after we caught all the ones who were hungry), I dropped my line all the way down to the bottom.  Now, all I had on there was about a half eaten sardine, from the Mahi Mahi.  I thought I felt a tap, but nothing followed it, so after a minute I started reeling it in.  I figured what ever it was stole the last little bit of bait I had on there.  But all of a sudden, the line went really tight, and I couldn't get the end up in the air, and something was pulling more line out.  When I couldn't get it up, Amanda came over, but she wasn't having any luck either.  We decided that I must have a grouper and that it had gone in it's hole, but that the line was going out because we were drifting.  Zack backed the boat up to where we were before, and Mister took the pole from me to try to get where we could work him out of his hole.  Meanwhile, Amanda had been trying to explain to me how to reel and work him up.  The water was about 90 feet deep there, and it was going to take some work.  I didn't understand what in the world she wanted me to do.  She was making no sense whatsoever, but when Zack got the boat where he wanted it Mister was able to back that fish out of there, and then I could see what Amanda had meant.  After a minute he gave me the pole back, and I started pulling the pole up as high as I could get it and then reeling like a maniac as I lowered it.  I was bracing it against my leg and my arms were killing me, because I have no arm muscles at all. haha.  Then Zack found a belt thing, that I could brace the pole with.  When I finally got it up close enough to see it I couldn't believe how big it was.  Then I'm sure I was entertaining trying to get it into the boat.  I have no balance at all on the water, I really had no balance trying to get this massive fish swung up into the boat.  I was falling all over the place.  But we finally got that thing in there.  It was 26 inches long.  Long enough to keep, and I have no idea how heavy it was, but I couldn't have held it up much longer than it took them to snap the picture.  It was crazy.

I caught another couple of little ones, not big enough to keep.  Gary ended up catching a gar a little later.  Dad caught the most, as he easily caught half the Mahi Mahi.  I caught the biggest.  And as Gary said, he caught the most trash. haha.  We had a good time.  The only down side was being insanely hot with no breeze at all.  Not sure if I do or don't want to go again.  30 miles from land over 90 foot of water.  That's a long way, away if anything goes wrong.  But we had good company, and I did have a good time.  It was a memorable anniversary, and it was great of Zack and Amanda to take us out.

Back at the beginning of the month we took our yearly trip to the Beach with Gary's family.  For almost every year since Britt was born, we have gone down to Anna Maria Island with Gary's parents and siblings, and all our nieces and nephews.  I thought I'd share some of my favorite pictures from the week.

12-19-1987, Me and Auntie playing in the floor.
This weekend Auntie (you have to say it Ain-ie) passed away.  It was a real shock since we just saw her on Tuesday.  She had been in and out of the hospital a lot over the last year or so, but at our visit she was feeling great, looking great, and still as sharp as a whip.

4-20-09, Auntie seeing Britt for the first time.
Auntie was an amazing person.  She and Uncle Hoyt were technically my great aunt and uncle, but they were so much more.  We all use to take turns going over to their house in the summer time.  We would cross the river leaving Decatur, and on the way back to their house we'd stop at the grocery store where we would get all sorts of things that Mother and Daddy never would have bought us.  Once I remember getting Reese's Cup cereal. While at their house, we'd sleep in, make forts out of blankets between the chairs and coffee table.  We'd watch the Home Shopping Network with Auntie, who loved to tell us about the jewelry.  I use to look forward to walking next door where a couple of my second cousins, Jennifer and Jamie, lived and playing cards with them.  They were older than me, and sometimes had summer jobs or other plans, but I always looked forward to seeing them.  The best part was staying up extra late and getting a midnight snack before bedtime (around 10:30).  She'd have several kinds of ice cream and every kind of topping you could imagine gummy worms, nuts, syrup.  The best dessert though was her chocolate pies.

6-26-11, Auntie with Ruth

More than my memories of what we did for those amazing summer weeks though, are my memories of her.  She had the biggest smile, and always was laughing about something.  She loved to aggravate and get us kids going, but never in a mean way.  She absolutely hated her first name.  And like most of the family went by her middle name.  Just on Tuesday she about had a fit with the nurse on the phone who she told "you should know by now my name is not Myrtie!"  She loved jewelry and Uncle Hoyt always found her the most beautiful pieces.  She was such a lady with her hair done, her clothes just so, her jewelry, and nails.  She was an Auburn fan and loved basketball, but went to every kinda sporting event everywhere she could.  She the kindest person, who loved her family.  She and Uncle Hoyt never had children of their own, but adopted all of us great-nieces and nephews as their grandkids.  And later, they both would light up any time I came home and brought my own kids.  Most of all I remember that smile and laugh.

11-25-2013, Britt showing his mammoth to Auntie.  He talked
and talked and talked to her about it.

Auntie was I'm going to miss visiting her on our trips home, and I wish we had thought to get a picture all of us together last Tuesday.  But I'm so thankful I had a chance to see her, to hear about the cousins and their kids, to listen to her give folks a hard time and laugh about it, to give her a hug one more time.  And to be honest she probably wouldn't have let me had a picture anyway, she wasn't going to get her hair done till Saturday anyway.

We went Ka-Warlo with Ahna and Grumps.    It took a long time to get there, it was so far away, but it was a fun trip.  And Flat Stanley comed with us.  When we got there we go-ed swimming in the sea water.  The sea water looked blue and kinda green and bluer the deeper.

Momma and I went for a walk on some rocks around where we went swimming.  We saw a sign that said do you want to swim with the dolphin.  There was a tank to get in and swim with the dolphins.  We didn't do that though, cause Ahna didn't want to swim with the dolphins.  She was afraid she would get her clothes wet.

I found some new pets.  Hermie the hermit crab.  Ahna said he lives in a pretty shell.  Momma said he was the kind of hermit crab that lives in the water.  Ever time a shadow fell on top of him, he goes in the shell because the thinks a bird is going to eat him.  I wanted to keep him forever, until he dies, but if I keeped him, I would need to find shells for him.  So that when he outgrows one of his shells he could get a new one.  When we left we found Lizzy my new lizard pet.  She lived at Ka-Warlo like the hermit crab.  She was a medium size lizzard, she couldn't fit in my cage, so Momma said we couldn't keep her.  And Lizzy lives where there are trees in Ka-Warlo.  Daddy says she was probably an iguana.

After we went swimming a little while, we went to eat with Britt and Rebecca, and Grumps and Ahna, and it was so fun.  I got Dr. Pepper to drink and Britt got water, so that he could get orange coke at the gas station when we left.  Rebecca got Dr. Pepper, and Momma got water, and Grumps got Pepsi.  And Ahna got yellow lemonade.  I ate shrimp and french fries, and the rest of the french fries I gave to Rebecca.  It was yummy and I even got to sit at the table outside over the water.  But I wasn't on the boat, I was eating on the plate at the dock.

We played in the water alot, but after it was all over we go-ed home.  Grumps and Ahna sleeped over and had lots of fun.  The end.

10-09-2015, Capture Your Grief - Day 9, Family

Today we were asked who is our family, what do they mean to us, what does our family look like. Unlike many, maybe most of the women I've talked to, no one has come to me and told me I should be over it, and to stop talking about Abigail. There have been some poorly thought out comments, but then again I don't even know what to say about what has happened. I've not needed to cut people out of my life, I've not seen some friends just drift away. Y'all have all been wonderful.

So family means to me what it has always meant. There is my actual family, my Church family (which sometimes is both, and often the most important family), and occasionally there are those rare friends that reach the status of family. They are the people who love you no matter what. The people you think about when you aren't with them. The people who you can't wait to see. I have a big family when I think about all these people - Mallards, Hurns, Varnums, and Cunninghams, Little Union Church, Old Carroll Church, Primitive Baptist this nation over some of whom are so close and wise they feel like extra parents and grandparents, Kristi and Melissa and Ashley and Kathy. So much love, and to think I've probably missed some.

As for our little family, it is Gary, Me, Britt, Ruth, Rebecca, and now Abigail. She will always be the unseen part of our family, the one we carry in our heart, the one unseen in family photos, but she will always be there, and she is loved by our family, our very large, loving family.

10-07-2015, Capture Your Grief - Day 7, Memory

Today's assignment was to share a memory. It's nice to think about the good ones, not just life since she's been gone. One of the absolute best memories from our pregnancy with Abigail was telling our family that we were expecting again. Gary and I are both the oldest of four, so we knew our parents would be appropriately excited with the news. I knew I wanted to tell them in person this time. We haven't lived near either side of our family for sometime, and sharing baby news is so much more fun in person.

I spent a week or two scouting the internet - pinterest, baby boards, the works. I wanted to come up with something new. Announcing a new baby is about the most fun thing in the world. And it's a chance to be creative. With the first I sent a basket to my mom from her grandbaby, since we didn't live near by. With the second we had a shirt made up for our first, you wouldn't believe how long it was before anyone read it, I about blurted out the news. For our third, I lined up shoes and added baby shoes, with the note that we were expanding our house by 2 feet.

I finally came up with the perfect idea. I made up the signs, and didn't even read them to the kids. Our oldest two are learning to read, and I wasn't sure they could keep the secret so after the picture I hid those away. We live near Hershey, PA now so I put the picture in a little bag with some candy. It was a "sweet surprise" for them.

Our oldest had asked to join the Church, and both sets of grandparents were coming up for the baptism. We all went to lunch together on Saturday before hand at Red Lobster. Afterward, I let the kids hand out the goodie bags. When our parents opened them and began to read, the smiles were wonderful. We had video of it somewhere. They weren't expecting it. It was the perfect surprise, maybe the best announcement yet. So, then I got to talk about what I'd been bursting to share ever since they all arrived.

Here's the photo we gave them. It was taken May 22, 2015.
The signs read:

Britt: Been There
Ruth: Done That
Rebecca: Now it's MY turn! I'm being promoted to BIG Sister!
Gary: We have a sweet surprise.
Me: Baby #4 to adore, December 2015.

10-01-2015, Capture Your Grief - Day 1 - Sunrise

Sunrise here this morning was at 7:02, but there was no sun to be seen, just the continuing cloud and rain, I checked out the window a few more times hoping for a glimpse of the sun. (Ironically enough that's about how this journey feels.) Nothing but rain and mist so heavy that it was almost impossible to see the neighbor's horse in the pasture by the house.

So I opted to do something different with today's post. I opted for "son rise" in our house. Each morning these three heathens wake up and attack the day with a vengeance. Our son wakes up the girls, and by the time we decide to peek into the room it looks like an explosion of dinosaurs, cars, and bed covers.

While I have an almost unbearable ache of what dynamic our fourthborn would have brought to this crazy trio, these three have also been immensely comforting. Even Rebecca who is never cuddly has been cuddly the last month. While it is bitter that life goes on, unchanged for everyone else, it is also good to know that for them, some things never change.

9-1, Rebecca pushing Ruth at Menard Park.

We have been back in Florida for a week now.  It's our first trip down in just over a year, and while we've seen some of the family when they have visited us, others we haven't seen. It's been fun to watch Rebecca with everyone.  She has really taken to her Aunt Joan and Aunt Heather.  She has slept with Aunt Joan every night since we got here.  Aunt Heather has been taken into the play tent, and to play games at Chucky Cheese, she's been her buddy.  Memaw on the other hand, she held out with for the longest time, and finally one day when me and Gary were in town, Memaw got on her good side by bribing her with ginger cookies.
