The Joy of My Salvation

Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. ~Habakkuk 3:18

I need to brag on my brother a minute, the kid's Uncle Benji.

Our finances have gone from bad to worse since last June, when Gary was laid off. He's had a few jobs since then, but nothing permanent. We've gotten by on unemployment, food stamps, gifts from fellow Church members, and loans from our parents. To be honest when I do the budget, I'm still unsure how everything has gotten paid so far. We are incredibly blessed with a good support system.

However, things have gotten to the point that we aren't sure if we can keep the house, or if we will have to sell it. So we needed to gut even the little things left in the budget. Things like dog food. The dogs were already not getting heart worm preventative, vet care, or grooming appointments. We had long since done away with eating out as a family. We are trying to only make one trip to town a week, other than Church on Sunday. So, I finally agreed we needed to rehome the dogs, for them and for the budget. It was a hard decision for me, because I'm an animal person. I have had Scout from a pup, and worked with him a lot. I got Ember as a rescue at a year, and never wanted her to not have a home again.

Telling the kids, over supper though, was the worst part. You see Scout is Britt's dog. He was his brother, when he didn't have any brothers. He is who has had read to for years, to overcome dyslexia. He is the one who comes up with new things to train Scout to do. He is the one who begs for the dog to sleep in his bed at night. Like any 14 year old boy there are times that the dog is neglected a bit in light of video games, but Scout is his dog. Ember is Ruth's dog. She has worked hard to train her, because Ember has a harder time focusing than Scout, and because we didn't have her from the beginning. She sits and talks with her when she won't share things with the rest of us. She has plans of eventually training her to do agility. Like any 12 year old girl there are times she complains about brushing her out or taking her out, but Ember is her dog. Telling them was awful. Ruth teared up, but didn't say anything until she went to rant to Ember the next afternoon. Britt on the other hand had wracking sobs, and offered to sell every thing he had to keep the dogs.

Britt even went to Mister the next day to ask for jobs to do for money. Mister gave him some jobs, but explained that we needed the money he earned to go toward the mortgage, not the dogs. He said he understood, but he was still praying for a way to keep the dogs. Britt then took the money to update their rabies shots and county license. I wanted to tell him the Lord doesn't really care about two dogs, but how could I discourage him like that. However, it appears that the Lord cares about two dogs, because He cares about a little boy, who kept praying full of faith that something would work out.

Earlier this week, my brother called out of the blue while I was driving home. He does every so often just to talk to the kids, after talking a bit he told me that he wanted to take the dogs for the kids, as long as we needed. He had rearranged some stuff with work and the house, and felt like he could take them on. He loves his nieces and nephews, and has constantly proven to have a big heart for them. He knew what the dogs meant to them. He offered to take off Friday and drive down for them, and then drive back home with them on Saturday, since he would have Monday, as President's Day and a federal holiday, to recoup. I was floored.  While no less of a blessing, it isn't surprising that our parents and our Church want to help us out. But I never would have expected my littlest brother to be able to do anything to help us out.

I cannot begin to describe how happy the kids were. Britt told me, I just kept praying for a way to keep them. He then had a long talk with Scout telling him about Uncle Benji, telling him bye, and who knows what else. Ruth squealed, and couldn't believe it. Rebecca needed clarification that it meant we wouldn't have to sell them at all. Kate was almost as happy as Britt, and promptly came home and laid on Scout the way she does and told him how great Uncle Benji was and how the trip would be a fun adventure. The twins just cheered because everyone else was in the car.

Benjamin and Daddy drove down yesterday. He's already got them a grooming appointment, since they are badly in need of one. He asked me to write up everything I could think of about them to help him out, so I put together a notebook. He took the dog training book for trouble shooting and an old baby gate to block the stairs. He wanted their vet records and anything else I had. He asked questions and loved on them.

As they got ready to leave today, I stressed to him I was hoping in 2 or 3 months we would be back on our feet, as Gary has started a new job, and will be on his own starting Monday. However, since it is solely commission, it'll take some time to get back up and running and caught up, so hopefully we can stay in our home. He told me again, to not worry about it, he was prepared to keep them as long as necessary. To not worry about them.

To everyone else they might just be dogs, but while not family in the sense that my kids are, they are part of our family. They matter a great deal to us. They are part of our household. Sure they have bad habits like counter surfing at times, and jumping the fence, but they have far more endearing qualities, like faithful loyalty and loving attention. And it means far more than words can convey that Uncle Benji cared enough about a small thing, among all of the stress we are under, to do this for the kids and me.

A few days ago, we decided to get another dog, and we found the perfect one.  She is 10 months old and this is how we got her.  The day we went to get her, we drove down to this dog park that had a small agility course.  That was really cool because our dog park doesn't.  And a few minutes after we got there, another person got there with Ember.  He name was Salsa, but I am changing it to Ember.  She is super fun to play with, and her bark is a little more high pitched that Scout's.  Scout came with us, and what he does with every new dog is jump on top of them and then roll over.  So she jumped back on top of him.  He didn't like that as much and was confused.  They got along great though.  We tried to make her go up the agility ramp, and she didn't want to, but Scout did except he was really slow.  Neither one of them would go through the tunnel hoop thing.  Even though at Memaw's house, he would run right through it to find me.  After a while of watching them, Momma said yes, and I got to bring her home.  She sat in the back seat with me and Kate.  Kate likes her but she keeps calling her Scout.  When we finally got home, they drank some water, and after she sniffed around alot they played. Together they are even more crazier in the yard.  She played even more the second day.  She prances over to things and every now and then chases Scout or us with a toy.  She doesn't fetch yet.  She runs really fast!  She's a natural at agility weaving between little spaces, and Scout couldn't keep up with her.  When she was running fast, Rebecca started running, and she ran and caught up on her, and jumped on her.  Rebecca said, wow, she is fast.  We jumped out of the way when she raced across the concrete, because we didn't want to get hit on that.  Scout was growling, grumbling under his breath as Ember said, "You can try and try but you can't catch me."  Her two favorite toys, is the small rope with the purple treat thingy on it, and Scout's pig.  She likes her pig but not as much.  Scout's doesn't have a squeaker anymore.  She liked getting a bath, but likes to sit up on the edge of the tub.  Ember's fur looks super pretty, and now that I notice it kinda looks like Salsa!

Scout and Ember are finally tired out after a very exciting day.

For Valentine's Day, write about someone you love.

I love Scout.  He is furry, cuddly, funny, and fun to play with.  I have a fun nickname for him, called Chewy or Scout-a-nator.  He could eat all day just like me, and loves to lick.  He likes to play pig ball like me.  That is a game I made up.  I throw his toy pig, and when he grabs it he tries to run to his goal.  I have to try to tackle him.  Sometimes he gets by and sometimes I get him.  Then we do it again.  He will also chill out and sit by me, chewing on his antler, while I watch tv.  It's relaxing.  He's not as wild as Neela, and that's a good thing, because Momma doesn't need a dog that wild.  Scout is very athletic and fun to run with.  He is also good to walk at night.

What was the best part of this past year?

For a few years, we were thinking about getting another dog, and Britt wanted a brother.    So, we were looking for a boy dog.  We kept looking at Huskies and Australian Shepherds.   Momma decided on an Aussie.  We found a breeder with puppies for sale.  Britt decided on a black tri, but he was still deciding on a name.  The names he was down to were Scout and Bandit.  So, we went there and we got Scout.  He was just a little smaller when we got him, but way heavier than Neela.  When we held him he would nibble and lick our ears.  He had a white spot where his collar would be shaped like a bandana.  When we went to bed, Scout was noisy, very noisy.  He wasn't use to being by himself, he had 10 brothers and sisters.  So next morning, we got Scout out and after about an hour, Britt decided he should be Scout because he sniffed around and scouted out the place.

Scout is super cuddly and big and super, super fluffy.  He is silly and flops on his back when he wants you to scratch his belly.  When he meets a dog he says hello by jumping on their heads, then he runs and runs and runs with them and rolling over.  He loves to run after balls.  One time, he ran to the ball and ran back, but he forgot to grab it.  Sometimes he grabs the ball but forgets to bring it back.  Sometimes he grabs the ball and then drops it before he gets back.  He's not really good at fetching yet.  Getting Scout was the best part of last year.

(Write a story from Neela's perspective, about the first time she meets Scout.)

I was in Mother's backyard playing with Mother when I saw somebody.  A white van.  I can't remember if it was 3 ft or 3 miles or 3 whatever.  I saw a puppy in that van, and then Britt, Ruth, and Rebecca came out of that white van.  Then finally Danielle who walked to the other side of the car and got out Kate.  But there was one person missing, but aww it doesn't really matter, because I don't remember his name.

Mother wasn't paying attention so I ran out of her hand to see what was going on.  Mother tried to get me, but she didn't because she couldn't run very fast.  I ran under the car, and Kate saw me.  She tried to come under too, but found out she couldn't go under so she came around as fast as she could.  I ran out from under the van, and tried to get in the house.  But I could not open the door, cause I couldn't jump high enough to reach.  I ran all over the yard to get away from Kate, till Mother caught my leash and took me inside.  Now I'm stuck with Kate, and I'm tired of her chasing me around everywhere.

Then I saw a puppy.  They called him Skip, Scoot, Scout.  I'm not really sure, cause I'm not that good at reading anyway.  So, I decided to try to get through the bars of the gate to meet this new puppy.  But I couldn't fit through the bars.  But Scout was tricky, and unlocked the gate, and I got out.  We started to travel up the stairs, and the cats were loose.  So I started to raise to catch them.  We herded them.  When Mother and Danielle came up the stairs.  Danielle got Scout, and Mother got me.  They closed the cats up.  So, we got put back in the living room.  Then Rebecca said, I found out how they got out.  Something slipped open in the little door, and she locked it back up.  So I don't know how I will get away from Kate again.

When I got away from Kate, I started to look at Scout a weird way.  Looking him up and down, I said, "I think I like you."

Then Scout said his first puppy word, " I like you too."

Then I asked what's your real name?

Scout said, "Scout."

I said, "I knew it!  I knew it was Scout!"

Scout looked at me confused, and then said, "Let's play with your toys."

I said, "Why not."  But just then Mother called me and it was time to eat, so we ate together.  Me and Scout turned out to be best buddies.  I like him, because we are exactly the same.  We both think Kate is a little crazy.  And we both like adventuring, even though Scout can't get up the stairs.  So you know what I said, "I said hey, when I come to your house in a few days, I can help you."

And Scout said, "Sure why not.  When are you coming to my house."

Then I said, "Next week."  I like when he comes to visit, and I like to visit him sometimes too.  The End.

(Ruth was undecided which of two story prompts to use today, so she combined too.  Pretend you are a cat or a dog.  Write about your family from their perspective.  One day you notice a new key on your keychain.)

One morning, I woke up and noticed Ruth in a rush.  It seemed like she was looking for something, but I don't really know.  She came outside, got in the car and started off.  But then she had to come back, go inside, and came back with a bag.  But before she came back, I snuck into the car, and hid under some bags.  I found some crumbs, and after eating them I began to look around.  When I saw a key, a big silver key.  So, a snuck into the front seat, by climbing under and around things.  It was very difficult, especially to keep Kate from seeing me.  When I got to the front, I picked up the key and tried to put it on the keychain with my teeth, but I wasn't successful, so I just dropped it in the bag.  When I went to jump out of the car, Momma closed all the doors and locked them.  When I couldn't get out of the car, I thought, "Everything is going to be fine, I'll just go on a trip."

But then, they put Scout in the car.  So I hid under the passenger seat.  After a bit the car suddenly stopped, and I wondered where we were.  I peaked out the door, and then decided to go and explore the place.  I think it was called Pet Co, but I'm not very good at reading.  But, I am very good at sneaking, so in I went.  But for some weird reason, the doors wouldn't budget.  Then a human walked up, and the doors opened so I followed them in.  When the doors closed, I looked around and there were dogs everywhere, surrounding me.  So I only had one thing to do... I ran as fast as I could underneath the biggest dog.  But my tail got soaked with slobber.  Yuck!  I dashed from aisle to aisle, trying to find a spot to hide.  When I finally found an opening, I slid underneath one of the shelves.  I saw through a door that all my human servants - Momma, Ruth, and the rest - were leaving.  I was stuck inside Pet Co.  I ran to the door in time to see them drive and park across the road in an apartment building parking lot.  I saw every single one of my slaves walk into the building.

For the next few hours, every time the door opened, I tried but I wasn't fast enough.  So I decided to just stay by the door, but then one of the Pet Co managers saw me and grabbed me and put me in the cage.  After three miserable days stuck in Pet Co with so many dogs barking.  Ruth came back and Momma said, "Hey Ruth, that cat looks like Flynn."

Ruth said, "Yeah it does.  I wonder where Flynn is,.  He's been missing for a few days."

So I tried to tell Ruth that it was me.  But she's pretty stubborn, and didn't understand a thing I was saying.  Doesn't she speak English!  But, luckily I was one of the cats on bottom, and one of the managers had dropped a silver key.  So I reached for it, but it was just out of reach.  Kate saw me and I thought I was done for, but she picked it up and gave it to me.  Then, as I took it, I dropped it.  Kate picked it up and put it into the keyhole. I tried and tried and tried to turn it, but it just wouldn't budge.  Eventually a dog came along, and tried to bite my paw, but it bumped the key just enough to turn it.  I hissed at the dog, and when he ran off, I quietly opened the door and snuck out.  I barely made it into the car, as the door slide shut, and Momma locked the doors again.

But then as I rode, I started thinking.  That silver key that Momma has looks alot like the key that the manager lady dropped.  I thought and thought, but couldn't quiet figure it out. Momma then looked for her phone, she found the silver key that I had placed inside her bag and hooked it onto her key chain.  When I looked more closely I saw a super small letter p engraved on the key.  So, I decided to make Momma and Ruth understand, but the car stopped again.  But I was afraid that we were in another place like PetCo, but we were home.  Momma went to grab her keys, while Ruth went to the back porch.  I hoped down and wrote what I thought was PetCo, with my claws in the sand on the driveway.  Ruth walked up and saw my attempts to spell PetCo, and I nudged the key.  So Ruth showed Momma the key and said, "Flynn drew something in the sand, but I don't think he knows how to spell.  Maybe it says popcorn."

But I heard all of this and I was mad.  After a bit they figured out it was Petco.  So all my human servants, got back in the car, and took it back to PetCo and told the manager sorry.  So they came home, and Ruth sat down on the back porch to hold and pet me.  This adventure wasn't much fun, I think I prefer staying home and eating squirrels.  It was a cat-astrophe.  The End.

(When we were talking about names for Scout we talked about some Greek names because we are studying ancient Greece right now.  While we were talking Momma said we should have named Flynn Aries because he's so blood thirsty.  That's when Ruth and I decided he should be Hades the god of the underworld.)

Once upon time, I, Flynn, was in Egypt and I was tired of hearing Anubis's speeches.  I can't remember if they were three days, three seconds, three hours, or three centuries long, but anway, I was tired of listening to him in Egypt.  So I decided to travel to Greece.  There I met Hades.  I said, "You should go on vacation and get a rest, and I'll take care of business here."

"Ok, I guess I'll go on a small vacation."  Hades replied.

The dogs found out about my move to Greece, so Scout told Zeus, "Maybe you should go on vacation and get a little rest.  I can take care of things here while you are gone."

Zeus replied, "Sure I'll go on a little vacation.  And I'll take Hercules along with me."

So I, Flynn, King of the Underworld, decided to summon my headless ghost squirrel army.  To take down Olympus, so I could get my revenge on the dogs and Scout.  Scout took my glory, my human servants, and messes with my tail, so he had to pay.  So Dog-ules (which is Scout) and Rusty Zeus (a dog neighbor of Ahna's) herded up their allies, the goat army, to stop me and my ghost squirrel army, (which have no heads, since I have beheaded all the squirrels).  But my army was not enough, Dog-ules and his goat army were too strong for me.

So I got Severus my three headed squirrel, the only squirrel that I allowed to keep his head, because he was a giant squirrel whose heads were too big to fit in my mouth.  It would have taken me a century to eat each head.  Severus came to the battlefield and scared the goats away.  There was only one thing for Dog-ules to do, he went to the pantry, and got his year's supply of acorns.  He threw them, and the biggest one went all the way back to the underworld, and rolled in to Severus's cage.  So Severus became trapped.  So it was down to Dog-ules and me, Flynn, King of the Underworld. So I pounced and scratched him, but he bit me in the tail, and slung me back into the underworld.

Three Days later.

"Hello, Flynn, how are you doing?  AAAAHAHHHHHH!"  Hades was MAD when he found out that I had replaced his three headed dog with Severus the three headed squirrel.  He was also less than thrilled that I had replaced his army with an army of headless squirrels.  "The worst part of all is that you have HUMILIATED ME!"  He screamed.

Then Hades caught me on fire, and I ran and yelled, "AAAGGGGHEHAGHHGHGHAAAHHHH!"

Then Zeus and Hercules came back.  "Ahhh, that was a relaxing vacation, would you say Hercules?"

"Yeah, Dad, it was great!" Hercules replied.

"Look Hercules, cute goats.  Let's keep them," said Zeus.  So they decided to keep the goats.  And needless to say Scout Dog-ules gets to visit Mt. Olympus anytime he wants.  I had to go back to Ruth's house, to live in the yard, and Scout got to go back to Britt's house, and hang out-in the house- when he isn't outside messing with my tail.

Two Days later.

Zeus was strolling around Mt. Olympus when he wondered, "Hmmm, what happened to my army?"

The End.

There was a baby lizard in our house, and I caught it on her tail.  Then we put her on Abigail's flower.  That baby lizard was so cute.  I named it Tiny Tiny.  I do have another friend lizard named Diamond, but it was way bigger than that lizard we put on Abigail's flower.  I can't wait to catch another lizard.  I might catch a different lizard or a different lizard.  There are a lot of lizards at our house.  I like them because they are so cute.  Yesterday I saw a lizard in the mail box.  The lizard was big, even bigger than Diamond, his name was Big Big.  I haven't named all the lizards yet, because I just got to this house, and I'm still looking for them all.

So yesterday, was a normal sort of school day.  Britt and Ruth were sitting and playing playdo.  Momma was reading from Exodus, something about a tent.  I was hanging out in my high chair munching on peanut butter cheerios.  Kita was sprawled out on a kitchen rug.  When all of a sudden she looked up and saw this.
It was going something like this.  One for me.  One for you.  One for me.  One for you.  She reached over, grabbed the camera, and got a few pictures before fussing at me.  I don't know why I'm not allowed to share.  All she does is talk to the other two about how good it is to share.  Sides, that's what Kita eats for a treat when she is training.  It's not like it was bad for her.  We were having a real good time till she broke up the party.

I had fun in the snow with Daddy.  He scooped up big snow and threw it everywhere.  Throwing snowballs was my favorite part though.  I rolled them all up in a ball, and then I couldn't throw them.  Daddy took them and threw them at Britt.  I forgot to sneak one and throw it at Daddy.  Maybe next time.

Kita likes snow too, she's so funny.  She eats snow, and puts her whole face in it and shakes it around.  Then she runs.  I like to watch from the window.  I don't like outsie much. I don't like cold.

8-24, Kita, almost 1 year
Tomorrow Kita will be 1 year old.  It's amazing how much she has grown and filled out.  She is still a puppy in SO many ways.  The insane amount of energy she has for one thing.  She likes to chew on sticks, but doesn't bother much else.  She still grubs, but doesn't dig big holes. She still wants to wallow in your lap.  Apparently she thinks she is a 3 pound tea cup Yorkie not a 45lb Husky.
10-12, Kita, 1 month old
I have been looking into some training classes for the two of us. Gary promised me a while back that when things got to be more settled, i could plan to go to one with her one night a week.  it will let me do something i enjoy and have time awayfrom the kids. Her only really bad habit, that I've got to work on breaking her of, is her tendency to leap 6 ft in the air when you first walk up to her or when she gets excited. But I am also hoping to get some pointers on improving her stay, it is only about 3 seconds long, and her leash walking. She must think she is pulling a sled all by herself in the Iditorod anytime we try to walk.  We will probably start that October 15th.

I don't normally like to post more than once a day, but I have a funny story to share, that just can't wait.  Britt, as you might have gathered from his post earlier is crazy about Angry Birds.  Ahna found a couple of boxes of Angry Bird band aids while she had the kids, so she got him some.  Britt saw them last night, as we were unloading the car, and he wanted one before bed.  I told him he didn't need one and though he wasn't thrilled, he headed off to bed.  This morning, he tried to convince me that his week old scratch that is nearly gone needed one.  He also manufactured several "accidents" this morning, that left terribly painful, invisible cuts, in an attempt to get an "Angry Bird bandage."  He didn't get one.

We went off to conquer our day - speech therapy, doctor's appointments, lunch, landscaping appointment, scheduling other things for the next week.  This evening, Britt was playing outside with Kita.  He takes a stick and runs around the yard, dragging the tip.  Kita bounds along beside him, trying to catch the stick and then take it from him.  Sometimes she gets it and goes tearing off in the opposite direction for a game of keep away.  Sometimes she gets aholt of it, and they play tug a war.  Sometimes Britt throws it and she goes after it.  She will catch it, play a little keep away, and then drop it by him for another round.  Today, we had one of those moments, where I really wish I had my camera rolling.  Britt was running, and dragging the stick like usual when Kita dove for the stick and instead caught the hem of his bluejeans.  As always, she whirled around to take off with her stick, but instead Britt went down on his behind, and she went flying across the yard, with his pants flapping in the wind.  See he didn't have any shoes or socks on, and I suspect he hadn't even buttoned his pants from the last trip to the bathroom.  Kita got all the way across the yard, before realizing that she didn't have the stick after all.  She dropped the pants, came back and got her stick.  Britt meanwhile is laying on his back howling about how Kita tried to eat him, and how he is hurt.  For all of that, he had a small cut on his wrist.  So we went inside, I washed him off, got him dressed again, and let him pick out an Angry Bird band aid   He is really proud to be sporting it, and with in 5 mins, he was back out chasing Kita in the yard.

Kita is 5 months old today.  It's amazing how much she's grown.  I put her on the scale with me the other day to weigh her.  She's up to roughly 25 lbs.  She's still a bit mouthy and nips a bit when she plays, but she's still a puppy.  She is getting a bit better about that.  The only other big problem we have is that she doesn't mind being crated, except at bedtime.  For a while she would howl.  She's mostly quit that, but she somehow is rattling the cage at night.  She doesn't do it every night, and even those that she does she doesn't usually go on all that long.  Sometimes though, she just keeps at it, until we have to move her crate into the garage, to keep from going crazy and get some sleep.
She's learned alot.  She's very reliable with sit and come.  She was making good progress with lay down too, but I didn't really work on it with her over the Christmas/New Year's break, so she's not doing so hot with that right now.  We've also been working on "go to bed" which we are having some mixed results with.  She listens to me most of the time, but I also reward her at bed time with a treat.  She doesn't listen to Gary so much, unless she just wants to go to bed.  I'm also needing to start work with her to sit when someone approaches.  She gets overly excited (especially when she's on her line in the yard), and begins bouncing.  She's getting some real height now to her jumping.  One of the training books I read, said it's alot easier to teach a dog what to do instead of a bad habit, rather than trying to teach them not to do a bad habit.  For example, teach a dog to sit when someone approaches, instead of trying to teach them to not jump.

7 Weeks
I'm just getting around to introducing the newest member of our clan.  It's been a busy few months.  Gary bought me a husky pup, back in October, as a very early Christmas present.  (It's also my Valentine's Day, Birthday, Mother's Day, and Anniversary gift.  Gary told me if I was very good that I might get something next Christmas.)  I named her Nakita, but the kids mostly call her Kita, so it's stuck.
11 Weeks
I've wanted a Siberian Husky for nearly 15 years.  I think out of all the dogs out there, that they are absolutely the best family pets.  They were originally trained by the Chukchi people in Siberia, and are very little changed from that time.  They were trained to be long distance pullers, but to work on very little food.  They had to be able to run in snow storms, think fast, and find the safest routes, even if that meant not following direct orders.  They lived largely in the homes of the people, and were raised with their children, even sometimes being used as "baby sitters."
12 Weeks
They haven't been an overly popular breed until the last few years, but they first came to the attention of the public when Nome, Alaska was struck with a diphtheria epidemic.  The medicine to cure it didn't make it in by boat before the ice settled in for the winter.  They were unable to fly it in due to snow storms and poor visibility.  So the decision was made to bring it in by dog sled relays.  Twenty mushers ran over 674 miles, in 5 1/2 days.  Leonhard Seppala covered the longest and most treacherous stretch, including running over the shifting ice where the Berring Sea was frozen over.  He with his team of Siberian Huskies lead by Togo, had won alot of long distance races over the past three years.  He handed it off, and the final leg was made by another musher with his second best team lead by Balto.  Many of the mushers suffered sever frostbite, and some of the dogs died making the run.  And they have captured the public attention ever since.

They are highly intelligent dogs.  They had to be able to know in dangerous situations where to find the best footing, and keep their drivers safe.  Kita is no exception.  She has learned several commands very quickly, and you can see her mind working to figure things out.  They eat much less than the average medium to large dog breeds, because of the unique way their metabolism works.  They conserve energy in a variety of ways and some science has recently shown that their mitochondria may adapt to do the same amount of work on varying levels of food.  If the science proves true and can be broken down that might give us the science to heal all sorts of diseases.  Huskies are highly food oriented though, and so it makes it easy to train them with food.  While each dog has their own personality, by and large they are very good with children.  Kita nips a bit, but is getting better, other than that she's great with the kids.  In fact, Britt is convinced that she's his dog, and no one else's.

The big draw back to Huskies is that they can be escape artist, and if they are loose they run and run and run, and 100 miles down the road realize they aren't home and don't know where they are.  Some Huskies can be diggers, in that they dig 4 feet deep holes for the fun of it, or to just lay in.  By all indications, while Kita likes to grub (use her nose to dig out and eat stuff), she doesn't really actively dig.  If I can get her to the point where she doesn't pull so much on the leash, we'll be doing GREAT.  With the loss of the job, we didn't board her for the long Florida trip.  She has done great in the car, both napping at my feet and riding in her carrier in the back.  Gary tells her that she's as bad as a cat, as much as she sleeps.  She is very mellow for a husky.

Happy Faces vs. Serious Faces

While we were in Florida, we went to our old house, and got out the chicken coops and runs from our old house.  I was very unhappy that my chick wasn't there, and I wanted to live in this house a long time.  I didn't understand why Momma told me that we couldn't.  I was a big helper though, Daddy would unscrew things, Mister would use the crowbar to pry them up and then I would pick up the sticks.  Momma says I was a good helper, but only for about 5 mins.

After I got tired of all that, they started cutting poles and rolling up the wire, so that we can build another chicken coop whenever we can have chickens again.  First, I pretended to be a chicken, so that we could leave the coop up, but when that didn't work I picked out a sword from all those farthing strips that we had pulled off, and Momma and I went for a walk down the dirt road.  We picked some oranges, and fed the cows, and talked to the bull, and then we shared a Dr. Pepper and some Pringles.  It was a fun afternoon.

Sunday afternoon we went over to Aunt Melanie's house to play and visit.  We got to talk to the turtle which was very exciting.  I kept asking him what was his name and he wouldn't tell me, so Britt named him Joey too.  Ahna said he had to pick a new name, but we never thought of anything.  The best part was playing with the dogs.  Aunt Melanie has two dogs a Sophie is a little dog and Callie is a big dog.

We liked Callie alot.  At first I wasn't sure of her she was so big, but she was really calm and gentle too.  We laid and watched tv together, and played in the floor.  Callie gave us some kisses too.  Sophie was crazy running around with us, but Callie was just cuddly. Momma asked us if we wanted a big dog like Callie, sometimes Britt would say yes and sometimes he would say no, but I always said, "YES!"

We've been needing to do some improvements to the chicken run we've had for a little while now.  Now that we have 16 birds they need more space.  I've also decided it would be alot easier to clean it out and get to eggs that are occasionally laid in the dirt if it was tall enough for me to actually stand inside it.  If it was bigger they wouldn't kill all the grass inside which makes for a healthier run.  The biggest reason however, is that the old coop was coming a part in a few areas, and the chickens were digging down into the dirt along the edges to stay cool.  We have had something reach under and grab at chickens, and we have had some wild cats get in, and it was just a matter of time before we lost more than the two adolescent chicks, and started losing hens too.

Granddaddy sent us a little money to help with shoring it up, and we took what I've been saving from selling eggs, and we started looking around. We found some hog wire on sale. I thought it was a little too wide, because the chickens can stick their heads out to peck at grass on the other side, but Gary pointed out it'll be more than sturdy enough to keep anything out of it. We raided Granddaddy Garland's barn, Gary's parents, and the pole barn here for wood to frame it up. We found almost everything we needed, except for a couple of long 2x4s. Gary got those and a screen door at Lowes. The one thing we had trouble finding was some sort of aviator netting to go over the top of the run. Real aviator netting is pretty expensive, and most of the deer netting we found wasn't wide enough, and was really expensive. I finally found some netting for covering fruit trees to keep the birds off of them, for cheap down at Ace Hardware.

It took us about a week, due to Gary working in the evenings and rain every afternoon, but we got it all finished, before we went back to Alabama to pick up the kids.  It's been really rainy the last few weeks, so the ladies have spent most of their time in the coop, but they seem to like the new roost bars outside, and all the room to run around.  The coop covers the area that the old coop did, so it's mostly just dirt there, so that's were they take their dust baths.  Most mornings though you can see them all huddled up under the guava bushes in the shade.  There is less squabbling too, now that they have more space, and less broken eggs.

Gary also helped me make some repairs to the old run, and build in a small coop into it.  We still need to fashion some sort of lid to it, so that I can get eggs out, but we've moved all the Marans together into it.  I've got them separate because I'm hoping to try to hatch one more set of eggs out of them.  In the oldest and littlest pen, we have the coop attached that Uncle Quintin built when they had chickens.  Right now we have our only Maran chick from our last hatch, back in April.  When she is big enough, we will move her in with the others, and that pen will be available for another batch of chicks.  All in all, I think we have a nice set up, and if we decided to quit keeping chickens, Gary pointed out that the new run, would make a good dog pen.

So from previous post you probably know that we are getting quite the collection of animals around here.  I was looking at coop ideas on BackyardChickens.com the other day and a lady wrote something I could completely agree with. She was saying that they got chickens because, "I like animals, and he likes to be self-sufficient. Isn't that just the story of our lives? " I can completely agree because I like animals alot, and Gary is totally self-sufficient, as he often says, he doesn't need animals in his life to be complete, or anything like that.  We work on two different wavelengths.  I love animals, and want to give them the best quality of life possible.  After all, we get to go to heaven after this, they just die.  This is there one shot at life, shouldn't I try to make it good for them?  Anyway, if Gary wasn't in the picture I'd be that crazy lady.  I want two Siberian Huskies in the house, and I never meet a stray cat that I don't think should come home with us.

We already have 18 chickens (if you count the chicks too), we are about to get three more from a friend who is getting rid of a few, and of course we already have a mix-Siamese cat.  So the last thing we need is another cat.    On Friday, I thought I heard baby birds crying from a nearby tree.  We have a couple of bluebirds nesting in two bluebird boxes, a couple of cardinals in the bushes to one side of the house, and a bluejay who's made a home in our dead oak tree.  I didn't have time to check then, I was trying to mop when Gary had the short ones out of the house.  When Gary got home, he heard the crying and he walked over to a tree to find a black kitten not more than 6 weeks old, alone and stuck.  He picked it up and brought it to me.  I promptly decided to feed it and take care of it.  After all it's just a baby, and I don't think it will make it on it's on.  Gary agreed I could take a couple of days and try to find her a home.  She's had some soft cat treats, and some cat food softened up with water.  I hoping we find a home for her, because I know Gary HATES cats, and doesn't want any more.  As sweet as she is and as much as I would like to keep her, I won't do that to him again.  She was pretty nervous at first, but she has warmed up considerably.  She likes to play with the kids, and has even let Ruth hold her.  She's playful and snugly, and since I firmly believe all animals need names, I'm calling her Darcy till we find her a home.  After all she's a black cat, Darcy means dark, and I like the name.  Do you want a kitten, do you know someone who does?  Leave me a comment let me know.

Our newest chick is the only one to hatch out of our last.  It came from our blue maran hen and rooster.  We had a 25% chance of getting a black chick (which I would prefer for a rooster), a 50% chance of a blue chick (like what we have, and what I would prefer for a hen), and 25% chance of getting a splash.  Chicken genetics are fun.  I always thought genetics were interesting.  Anyway, you can guess what we ended up with-  yup, a splash.  I think it's a rooster too.  We are holding off on naming it until we know that it is going to make it and what it is.  I will confess I'm already looking for general names just in case - I considered Marquis de Lafayette, the French general that helped during the American Revolution.  Think about it, Marquis fills my M requirement because it's a Maran, Lafayette was French just like the Marans are a french breed.  (I know, I know, I'm a total history nerd).  And if you think that sounds like a mouthful for a chicken just remember that Lafayette was his title not his name, his actual name was Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette.  Anyway, the new chick is doing really well considering that it has no nest mates.  I think it has decided that I'm it's mother.  It likes to sit nestled up on my shoulder, and surprisingly enough hug out there for over an hour on Wed while I sat reading a book while the kids played outside.

In other news, we rearranged our chickens Saturday night.  Most of our last hatch wasn't fertile, or at least didn't develop (truth be told Gary took care of the dud eggs this time, and he didn't check all that closely).  The "chicks" Aurora and Blanche are actually adolescent pullets now, about 9 1/2 weeks old.  The recommended time to reintroduce them to the rest of the flock is between 2 and 3 months.  They are big enough to stand the pecking order and are fully feathered with their adult feathers, but they aren't so big as to get into fights with the older hens. Since that would have put us up to 17 birds in a coop built for 16 and a run built for 13.  They are a bit crowded (we do plan to build a bigger run soon).  To fix both problems we've moved the rooster and his three ladies into the smaller pen.  This way I can guarantee fertile eggs for the hens we want chicks from.  And the younger birds went into the big coop.
